But sitting here drinking and listening to his channel on sirius, I am realizing he really can't sing. Kudos to him for the brand that he built, but really?
I'm kinda the same way. I never have really cared for Jimmy Buffet, but he is a hell of a brand marketer. His food sucks at his restaurants too. The only reason to patronize his food chain is to either get fkd up on (expensive!!!)fruity ass drinks, or to oogle some of the female patrons and bar staff.
It is all about the party more than the music. He is a terrible writer as well. His books are fun reads, but they are jumpy and rarely flow seamlessly
I like his music. Especially the early years.
I like his books. Except "Swine Not", did not enjoy or finish.
His margarittaville restaurants are OK. More about atmosphere than cuisine.
He is a story teller. "It's a semi-true story, believe it or not. Made up a few things and a few forgot"...
He has stated many times he knows he's not a musician. He's the pioneer to the "Trop Rock" genre.
Radio Marharittaville on XM is pretty good. I listen occasionally. They play songs from other artists I don't hear much elsewhere.
Lastly, yes...he is a brilliant businessman and built a brand that sells.
Bubba from Bama done good. :cert:

I kinda agree. It's why after spending time with the local Parrotthead club, we quit going to their shindigs. It's a drinking club to the backdrop of Trop-Rock.
They do raise money for worthy causes, both nationally and locally. So that is commendable.

JB can't sing worth a sh it but you go to one of his concerts and 50,000 drunk people all know the lyrics. It's more the lifestyle than his singing. It's always funny when people finally listen to his music sober.
There is irony to his story:
He goes to key west because Nashville shunned him. The record producers couldn't pigeonhole him. (Not country. Not rock. Not folk) He creates a genre (he called it Gulf & Western, it became Trop-Rock) and HUGE fan base.
Not 1/2 of the Nashville songs have Buffett influence. :Jeff '79:

I disagree. I think that he's done well with the voice that he was given. I like his minstrel like singing. That's like saying that Dylan can't sing......so what. They're both poets more than song birds for sure.
If you know the story behind some of the songs. Especially the early years in key west. Listening to them is fun. And often emotional.
"A Pirate Looks at Forty" (about his friend Phil Clark who drowned) is my favorite. I damn near get allergies every time I hear it.
"One Particular Harbor". "The Captain and the Kid". "Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season". Good stuffs. I could list dozens.
The old stuff was from the heart. When he was a poor stoned street performer. The new stuff is ok. But more oil for the money machine. IMO.
I have seen him many times, from the small venues around Miami in the early 70's to the big concerts. He has always put on a good show. Not the best singer, especially as he ages, but a great entertainer.
I like the Gypsys in the Kitchen song. It is about the hippies taking over his house while he was away and eating/partying at his house while he was on tour.

I have seen him a couple of times. Enjoy his shows, always has guest singers, does make for a good party atmosphere. I have a tiki bar at my pool, play his music a lot , while swimming and drinking margaritas by the pool. Have also been to a few of the Margaritaville restaurants and have enjoyed the food and the ambiance.

I was in Key West one time with some friends, one of which is a huge Buffett fan. We go to a bar and a band is setting up. I ask if they take requests. They said yes. I said "Play some AC/DC maybe?" Sure. My friend says "How about some Buffett."
It was like he just said "Hey, I f'ed your mama last night."
The singer stares at him and says something to this effect "Look, everybody here in Key West is sick of Buffett. If you want to listen to his music, you can just walk down the street to that Margaritaville place and have a shitty hamburger and listen to that crap. We're not playing it here, ever."
He was taken aback needless to say. I was
The singer further elaborated that Buffett, when he's in town, walks around like he owns the place and is pretty much a jerk to the locals. That's what he said anyway, I'm just the messenger here. From then on I noticed that I never heard any Buffett music in the various bars there.
He's selling a lifestyle brand.....like FUBU, but for middle aged white people.
