View Full Version : Service charge from bank

I just received a letter from Citibank that my "free" account will no longer be free. Because it was tied to my mortgage account, I was not charged any fees. They have changed their policy.
Do any of you know of any bank that does not charge fees for a simple checking account with a debit card? The only purpose of the account is to hold a few hundred bucks out of my regular account for my own personal use. It is/was mostly going money, but now it has become kind of an allowance so it only has about $1000.00 at any given time.
It has minimal activity ever. Just deposits each pay and an occasional withdrawal. If I do nothing, eventually the service fee will clean out the account. It happened to me with Wells Fargo years ago.

If you're in Texas, check out Frost Bank.

TD Bank, $100 minimum balance - no monthly fee. You dip under the $100 minimum and they hit you with something like a $12 "service charge".

:iagree: He beat me to it.
Capital One has no minimum, that's what I used back in the old home town but they aren't wide spread- none in this hell hole I live in now or I'd still use them.

I dunno what to tell you man, I just lucky that a relative got me into a Credit Union....years ago, down here.....so far so good.....
but I went to a friend's wedding celebration party last Sat night, and so went to the beer store to buy a 12 pack, noting that not all beer is 12 oz anymore, many 12 packs are 8 oz.....go figger....same price I used to pay for 12 oz of course and so the total came to like 12.17 I not carry any change, and so pulled out the debit card.....and was told that to use credit/debit cards there was a 50 cent charge added to it.....it's the banks, not Pete..the owner of the small store.....
:issues::issues::kick::sadangel::issues:
Haven't used a bank in over 25 years. Always use a credit union. Have nothing but great experiences with the Credit Unions and nothing but pure pain with a Bank.
Last bank we used was Central Fidelity in VA. After they took $45 out of our account for their mistake, I decided to take my hard earned money out of the bank and into a credit union. Best mistake the bank ever did.
We actually have two bank accounts with different credit unions, one Navy Federal and the other our local credit union. Navy Federal actually pays a dividend on our checking account with free checking.

^^ Around here the small businesses have signs like "$10 minimum purchase for debit card". I've never seen them come right out and charge an extra fee for it. Sounds like that guy Pete doesn't want to pay the charges for his POS system. You gotta pay to play, or only accept cash. I think what he's doing sucks more than the banks getting their fair share for the POS system.

If that is all. I'd just keep the cash in a coffee can in the garage. :island14:

Suntrust is about the same. Except you need either direct deposit or at least 10 transactions a month as well.

I actually use Wells Fargo for my local account and another online bank for my bill pay and such.
My account with Wells fargo says I need a savings account with a minimum of $50 a month activity...there might be a minimum $1000 balance as well, but it's not big. I've yet to be charged. Wells has changed the rules a few times, but not recently.

This would be direct deposit, but I would not do 10 transactions. As long as it is "or" I'm good.

It's or. My main account at Suntrust is direct deposit, so no minimum and no transaction limits.
But I opened a second recently and it was $100 min and 10 transactions a month. Transferring money from one account to another counts as well.

can you open a savings account with it, and do automatic transfers between the two? That's what I do.

chase - no fee checking with direct deposit.
If I was a banker I would not hold a small sum deposit with out charging a fee.
Banks are a business. Do the math. It's a losing endeavor.
The banks that do, are throwing a bone in hopes you'll pick up their CC or use another banking service that's profitable.

Your local credit union is most likely your best bet.
