Finally found a power hacksaw that was both heavy duty and affordable. I found a Racine power hack saw on CL that is complete except for an electric motor.

I took my trailer this morning and took a 45 minute ride to where it was located. We agreed on a price and he put the saw ( which he already had on a skid ) on my trailer with his bobcat skidsteer . When I got home, I unloaded it myself which was actually pretty easy since my trailer tilts. The saw is all cast iron and weighs easily over 300 lbs.

It has patent dates of 1908, 1914 and 1918 on it

It has a missing handle to engage power

The flywheel has a clutch on it, here in the free wheel position

Since it was originally run off a flat belt ( most likely an overhead line shaft ), they added a piece of tubing and a jackshaft to power it

Even came with an electrical box

A yardstick ( from a local dealership that closed over twenty years ago ) for scale

Here's a youtube video of one running off a flat belt

I love old tools. They will last several lifetimes since they were designed to be repaired repeatedly instead of replaced as things wear out. Great find.

Cool old machine. Are you going to disassemble, repaint, etc.?

I restored a 1946 Delta bandsaw a long time ago, and it's my favorite machine in my shop. Nothing like good old heavy cast iron.

In your photos, there's a v-belt pulley outside the flywheel. In the video, it seems like it's driving something down at ground level. Do you know what it's for? Just curious...

Looks like a lot of fun to restore. Can you still get blades for it? Or do you have the modify some? :cert:

The V belt pulley is for the oil pump to lube the blade as it cuts.

1 hp but I did find a 120V 1-1/2 hp electric motor on CL

Blades are still available

From the looks of the power box, are you sure it's not a 3 phase design?

Previous owner could of installed a 3 phase motor starter.... In 1914 they didn't have disconnects and motor starters.

Looks like only 2 leads in the starter.
With no motor, it doesn't matter anyhow. A "3-phase starter" can be used for single phase.

That will last forever. I'm sure if you don't use it, some industrial museum will scarf that up. :seasix:

The guy who I bought it from had his Dad look at it and he said it was single phase. Not enough wires for 3 phase.

Right but you can install (in theory) a 3phase motor starter on a single phase motor.

Could of been the person before the last owner who did it.. the motor starter looks pre 1970s.

Another CL score, a 1-1/2 hp electric motor which can be wired 110 or 220 V :hurray:

More progress today :seasix:

I got a piece of 1/4" steel plate 12" x 16" for the jackshaft / motor mount. Made a longer shaft since I had to put both pulleys on the one side.

I had it running for about a minute. The Allen Bradley thermal heaters trip. I need to figure out what size I need. The motor has 19.2 amps draw running 110. I have size 27 currently in it.
