I used the most expensive cabot semi charcoal color that I could get my hands on and it now has traffic patterns from walking on it and letting the dog out after a year. It was put on 1 month old cedar and was prepped according to the destructions. It is the only entrance I use to my house and in its defense the rest of the deck still looks great. Just not where my boots have been stomping.

Deck stains get a lot of rough wear: Footprints, animal feet, and extreme weather and rain. I know of no stain that will last more than a few years. You can prolong it by clear coating, but you'll still need to remove the clear coat and re-stain every several years, then clear coat again. That's why most folks just let it turn gray with age.

Cabot Australian timber oil, not really stain just tung and linseed oil so when it wears off there is no residue, thus no flaking, peeling, scraping, sanding, etc. just recoat every couple of years

It depends on the wood.

I'm sure it was the cheapest stuff the deck contractor could get from Homo Depot at the time. :D

Treated Pine. And probably not #1.

Best thing to do is let it weather to a gray. When it gets real bad. Replace.
If you have the budget replace with cypress, cedar or redwood.
