View Full Version : Poor little guy: My Barkley buddy is in emergency surgery.

He started breathing and panting hard, walking around eratically, his legs were shaking, and he was visibly weak. He was like that for an hour so I decided to take him to the emergency vet. He puked on the way to the car, tried in the car, and puked at the vet twice. He wouldn't lay down or sit still.
He came back from x-rays with the vet telling me he had a flipped stomach and needed either surgery or to be put down. This all happened so quick. Naturally the first thing I said was to do the surgery.
I should hear a status update on him within an hour. He will also need to stay there for two days. :(

I understand how you feel, my dalmatian Apollo had to have surgery on his neck when he was 10 years old. He was in so much pain that it was either surgery or the needle. At the time I could barely afford the $5000 surgery, but I couldn't fathom the thought of putting him down. Luckily the surgery was a success and it gave him another good 3 years of life.
I hope Barkley has the same luck.

:sadangel: terrible when the little furry family members are sick, since they can't tell you where it hurts. I hope he recovers fast.

The problem with that condition is that even if you get it surgically fixed, it may happen again in a short period of time. Hope it works out for the big dog. :(

The larger dogs only have one ligament holding their stomachs in place. Now they fix it by putting it where it should be and then tacking it to the abdomen so it doesn't happen again.

He's just starting to wake up. The vet said everything went well. I'll go visit him when I wake up later thus morning.
She said that most dogs' stomachs flip clockwise and his went counter clockwise. He's always gotta be different.

Get well Barkley.
I've spent a small fortune on mine for surgeries, meds, etc...I wish there was a decent
insurance plan for them. No Vet trip is ever cheap.

Absolutly.....If you did not act and take him to the vet he would have expired. My bride the vet has done many surgerys on what is called a torsion(flipped stomach) and by sewing the stomach to to the wall she has no reoccurances.I'm sure your dog will be fine............:)

Glad he came through! I'm sure you already know you're supposed to feed small meals instead of letting him binge. We also elevate our tall dog's food.

Bloat is a very real concern for every deep chested dog breed. Our Great Dane was not allowed to run or play for at least an hour after eating, and never allowed to tank up on water. Still no guarantee.

update please!
I've lost one GSD "Hiro" to bloat. He was only 2 years old. Django also had bloat and got through the surgery but the trauma give him a condition called Degenerative Neuromyopathy which robbed him of the use of his rear legs. He only lived a year and half after beating bloat.
I'm at a point where I won't spend thousands on saving a dog (even though, as you all know, I love them like kids). The reason is that any major surgery seems to have negative consequences for the dog - they are never well again.
Instead, I've started seriously researching the different breeding lines and working with breeders by referral only.
Bloat is the worst thing to have a dog go through. I hope he comes out fine.
I've studied it quite a bit - if anyone wants to know more, let me know and I'll write up a thread on it.

I elevate his meals, several small meals throughout the day, and he drinks from the faucet on the kitchen sink (and the tap on my kegerator if I forget to turn the valve to the tap off).
Vet just called and said she sedated him because he's being to active, wants to play, and keeps looking for the exam room where he last saw me. He's doing great.

That's how we lost Mochi our first greater swiss mountain dog.

We don't let Levi play for 2 hours and we also had his stomach tacked so it can't happen.

We have been taking every precaution we can to prevent the same with our irish setter puppy. I started adding water to his food so it expands before he eats rather than after.

He's doing much better. I started weening him off the pain meds this morning and he's starting to get more active. When I left for work this morning at 11am he got up to go lay outside in the grass and get some sun in his favorite spot, so that's a really good sign. He was still a little loopy and took his favorite blanket with him though :funnier:
Damn, bloat is no joke. Glad to hear you caught it in time, and yeah, tacking is the way to go! I lost a good one to bloat several years ago and it sucks big time. Unfortunately his heart was weak, so he wasn't a candidate for surgery, and had to be put down :sadangel:. Both of my Danes are tacked now, and any new ones will be too :seasix:

Exactly. We get rescue dogs for the most part, and when we do, the rescue service have them spayed or neutered as needed and have them tacked before they place them. If we get one outside of rescue, we would get them tacked ourselves.

:yesnod: When Levi got neutered, we had his stomach tacked at the same time.
Money well spent
Glad he came through ok and that you caught it in time!
Had to have that done on my ~12 year old Yellow Lab several years ago.
Have a friend who lost a GSD to the same thing after not catching it quick enough. :(

Vadered this from yahoo, just now.:D:D
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The 3-year-old Great Dane was miserable and retching when its owners rushed him to a northwest Portland emergency animal hospital.
It was something he ate!
X-rays showed a stomach full of "a large quantity of foreign material." Nearly two hours of surgery later, Dr. Ashley Magee had the answer — the dog had consumed 43 ½ socks.
DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital spokeswoman Shawna Harch said it's perhaps the strangest case in the hospital's history, The Oregonian reported (A dog who ate nearly 44 socks helps a Portland vet gain national honors | OregonLive.com (http://is.gd/Zb55C9)).
So strange that the hospital entered last February's tale, complete with X-rays, in an annual contest sponsored by the vet magazine, Veterinary Practice News, and won a prize. Fittingly enough, the contest is called "They Ate WHAT?"
Even stranger. The $1,500 first place winner was a Plano, Texas, animal hospital that treated an exotic frog that ate more than 30 small ornamental rocks from its cage.
The DoveLewis entry summary says the Great Dane was discharged home a day after surgery.
