Update to my F 250 V-10 with the missing oil. Well I took the truck to the dealer for a look inside the valve covers and possible lifter replacement. What they found was about 1/2" of sludge around the inside of the heads. Ummmm it can only get better from here. The cams and everything inside the valve cover appeared to be covered in a thin coat of what looked like burnt oil. Everything has a sort of bronze shine to it. Now, this engine has never run hot or overheated, oil changes every 3000 miles or so. WTF did all this shit come from? The truck does not see dusty conditions and hell it only has 66,000 miles in 8 years. I do plow with it and we have had a few rough winters lately, but my plowing is very limited, 3 - 4 driveways. I am having them flush the engine and crossing all my fingers. Any ideas, comments or wise cracks? Let's hear um. Thanks

What kind of oil do you use?

I have all 6 of my vehicles serviced by a local Goodyear service center. Been going there for about 30+ years. He was using Quaker state last I knew, but I will have to check to be sure.

I found it 12 hours or so after I lost it :leaving: It appears the journals may be somewhat clogged and it is taking forever to drain back down. I searched under the truck for any sign of a leak and it was dry. That told me the oil had not gone anywhere and after sitting overnight I checked the stick again and "Eureka" we struck the motherload

What year 250?
I have a '99 350 with the V10 and it has been excellent to date. 155k on the odo.

Have you been using Ford oil filters? According to a buddy of mine that is a Ford heavy truck tech Ford uses a check valve to keep high pressure in the block. He said they like to see 80+

Interesting thread regarding non-Ford filters.

My service guy uses Fram, of course. Not on my vehicles any more. But i'm not sure you can pin this on the filter, other then the check valve. Oh, 2006 with 66,000 on the clock. The dealer will change the oil and filter after the flush.

I swear, as soon as I read this thread I thought Quaker State. I wouldn't ever use that in any machine I wanted to keep more than 30 minutes. Quaker State has been sludging up motors for a 100 years!

I grabbed a pinch of the sludge from the head and it's hard for me to feel anything in my fingers after 2 mini strokes and a nasty bout of Belles Palsy, but I didn't feel anything like grit or dirt, but as it warmed in my fingers everything was slick  I didn't see any real particles of a size indicating pieces of something and no metallic feel or look, just black shit and the cam looked shellacked.

I think that is what he's been using, but I gotta check.

 Also the Fram reference. I cringed. I just couldn't use conventional oil anymore unless it was a real classic vehicle. 100% synthetic.

I gotta agree on the synthetic. And OEM filters for the V-10, it has a K&N on it right now so i'm not too worried

Quaker State. I had a 28K mile Camaro break a timing chain due to sludge keeping oil from getting to it. The car had nothing but Quaker State from new. Never, ever will I use Quaker State again.

Fram and Quaker State ? Surprised you made it to 66K miles.

Won't hurt it now. It's shooting antifreeze out the exhaust. New engine time. Told them 100% synthetic and a fram filter :hurray: Can't wait for this bill :shots::shots::shots:

So much for the head gasket theory. Cracked mofo block

Damn man.... sorry to hear that.

I'm looking for a used 6 3/4 bed for it too. Who knows what model years are the same? Other then some slight changes to the tail lights there is not much change in a few years. I think the style started in 99, not sure if or when it ended. Looks like 99-present 250 and 350 are all interchangeable

1999 was the first model year for the change over but not sure when the cutoff is. I know the '03 Tritons were 3V in lieu of 2V, but not sure on the body.
