In a way... I think it would be kinda neat to watch one of these go off from a safe distance.

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—The alert level over Mayon Volcano has been raised to 2 from 1, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Friday.
Volcanologist Alex Baloloy, who is based in Lignon Hill Observatory here, confirmed, in a text message, that the alert level has been raised to 2 as of 1 p.m.
Alert level 2 means the volcano is in a state of “moderate unrest” compared to alert level 1 which means a state of “abnormal condition.”
The new alert level has yet to be posted on Phivolcs’ website but its 8 a.m. bulletin when the volcano was still at alert level 1 showed no crater glow was observed over the volcano last night.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) flux was measured at an average of 850 tons per day on Monday

When I visited Costa Rica a few years ago, we visited the volcano in their national park area. You drive up the mountain to the visitor's building, and then walk out to the viewing area and look down on it. Here's one of the pictures I took of it.

Anywho, it was cool and all. The next day, which was our last day in Costa Rica, we did a zip line. After we got done, our driver/guide said "Hey, guess what? That volcano we were at yesterday? Well, it just erupted and the road to the visitor center is wiped out."
And everybody who was up there had to be airlifted off the mountain, and they couldn't get their cars down for weeks.

Arenal - I have been up there and spent new years eve in the hot springs over on the side. The volcano erupted at least three times that evening while we sat in the springs drinking and celebrating the new year.
That was a fun evening....the next morning, I was being rushed to the hospital because of a dang scorpion sting and spent 2 days in a costa rican hospital bed watching a scooby doo marathon in spanish.....trust me, those two days sucked

That would have been wild.. you didn't see any signs of it getting ready to go off?
I notice a red spot about center of the photo, was that glowing hot? or just the color of the dirt?

My first distinct memory in Costa Rica was when an American ex-pat, who was living in the house we had rented, pulled a gun on me while driving me a mile or two up the road to the house. Seriously, he was super pissed that we showed up, apparently the owner of the house had not informed him he had rented that unit out and now he had nowhere to stay. This Jim guy worked for the owner and ran his properties. He was a real asshole, and when he stuck that .357 revolver in my face I got pissed and literally disarmed him while sitting in the passenger seat of his Jeep, flicked the cylinder release, and dumped the cartridges out onto the floorboard. He was so shocked, he meekly accepted that he had to move out at about 1:00 AM (it was late) and the house itself was so filthy it took two tico maids the entire next day getting it livable for us. Jim slept in his car in front of our house the first night, creeping everyone out. Then he moved into a house that was under construction next door and would just sit out on the porch and stare at us. After four days of this I told the other couple adios and our driver took my wife and I back to San Jose and we stayed at a nice resort for a few days.

It was just smoking like in the picture, that red spot is just a stain or something. Having no idea what it was like normally, I figured it just smoked a lot.

For some reason when I think about a volcano getting ready to go off, I have visuals of ancient natives tossing a cute naked virgin over the side as an offering to the fire gods.
But in reality it was probably more like them just pushing Red over the side wearing a loin cloth.

That would be Red driving over the side in a clapped out beater with 340,300 gentle miles on her.

Now that would have been wild, and guessing you were out there far enough no one would have ever heard the shots had he snuck up on you in your sleep.

Looks like you are about 100 miles from Mayon Volcano. If it decides to go, you will see it and hear it.....and to be safe, make sure you have plenty of water because that ash will gum up the water supply over there if the winds are not in your favor

Nah, we were in a beach-side village. Plenty of other houses around and people to hear him fire a gun. He was just trying to intimidate me, thinking that might work. It didn't. Oh, and I found another gun in his closet and kept it in my room. I even told ol' Jim I had his other gun (it was just a .38 revolver) and it would be there when I left. Then he whined about his booze in the cabinet so I let him grab a couple of bottles and then told him to GTFO and stay out of my way.

I'm not going anywhere.. my luck I would sit there for a month or two waiting for the fireworks. and it would go off the day after I left.
It would be neat to see and get photos of though.

So it went from a 1 to a 2...?
What is the scale though, does it go to 3...5? 10? Does it go to 2...and they are all fked?

Based on this....
State seismologists on Friday afternoon raised the alert level at Mayon Volcano in Albay province to "2," citing increasing unrest in the volcano, after noticing the formation of a new lava dome measuring 30 to 50 meters high.
I don't think it will be long before the Mayon decides to pop her top :dixie:

Still a pretty wild story considering the guy was wanted for murder.
It does not take a lot of physical strength to pull a trigger.
If I remember right wasn't it you that found a girl out back of a restaurant that you worked at, that had just been stabbed... or throat cut or something that died?

Well, a girl was stabbed in the back of the mall where I worked at a restaurant and she walked into the mall all bloody and I saw her take her last breathe after I ran over to her and she collapsed on a shoe display. The car she was stabbed in was parked next to my car (coincidence) and she got blood all over the outside of my car.
I noticed when Jim stuck that gun in my face that his finger wasn't on the trigger. Reflex caused me to then grab his wrist and point the gun up over my head, and I then grabbed the gun out of his hand with my right hand. This happened in less than a second, he was stunned that I'd do that.
That was the second time in my life someone pointed a .357 revolver at my face. The first time the guy slightly raised the gun and fired a round off about two inches over my head, serious as shit. We were helping his soon-to-be ex-wife (a coworker) move her stuff out of their home. He was pissed, lost it, and did that. A month later he committed suicide with that same gun. I didn't report it to the police, just wanted to stay far away from him.

I saw a guy do that in a bar once.. he laid the gun right on the other guys head, then the one guy just said go ahead...
The guy with the gun slightly turned the barrel up and fired it.. leaving powder burns up the guys forehead and parted his hair...
Not funny at all I thought, but they had a beer afterwards.

As you know anything 100 miles from here isn't an easy trip.
Not sure where it is, but guessing it would be several boat and bus trips to get there. Possibly a few days journey.

That's a lot of jogging..and swimming... :Jeff '79:
The solid blue lines are not a highway, but sea.. so need to also do some swimming.. but the dotted blue lines might have a few roads...
Also it shows a blue line where the ferry boat goes to Hagnaya From Santa Fe, but from there there is no boat north from there.. possibly there is a northern bound boat from up north there in the town of Daan Bantayan, (not sure) but they do have boats from there to several other islands.
