The guy I took my golf lessons from, Marshall Smith (now deceased) was best buddies with Mickey Mantle, and of course Mickey knew all sorts of sports legends. While at Marshall's house, where he invited my wife and I for drinks after a hot couple of hours at the range, I noticed a picture of him, Mickey, and Joe standing right in the place where the picture was hung.
Joe was in a full-length mink coat. I mentioned that, and Marshall laughed and said "That fool gets off the plane at the Miami (OK) airport and it's 100 degrees outside. And he's got that stupid coat on!" So even when not in the spotlight, Joe was rather eccentric.
