(Reuters) - A tourist seeking to take pictures of Yellowstone National Park crashed a camera-equipped drone into its largest hot spring, possibly damaging the prized geothermal feature, a park official said on Wednesday.

The incident follows the crash earlier this summer of a drone into a marina at Yellowstone Lake and a string of radio-controlled aircraft violations at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

The National Park Service in June announced a ban on so-called unmanned aerial vehicles, but officials say premier national parks in the U.S. West are reporting a sharp rise in the number of drones buzzing bison and boaters.

It was not clear if the drone that crashed Grand Prismatic Spring on Saturday and sank into its depths would damage the geothermal feature, park spokesman Al Nash said, and officials were still trying to decide whether to remove it.

"What we have to determine is whether the presence of this radio-controlled recreational aircraft poses a threat to that unique resource," Nash said of the Grand Prismatic, the third-largest hot spring in the world and a top attraction for the roughly 3 million visitors who flock to Yellowstone each year.

The park is puzzling over how to find the drone and extract it without damaging the hot spring, which is 370 feet in diameter, more than 121 feet deep and known for its brilliant colors caused by bacteria and minerals in the water.

The desire by some visitors to capture and post online footage of wildlife and scenic views must be weighed against public safety, protection of natural resources and complaints by an increasing number of visitors who say low-flying drones have marred their experience at Yellowstone, Nash said.

Drones are not the first challenge affecting natural resources at a park that spans parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Visitors in decades past threw coins in water features.

Fishing Cone Geyser on the edge of Yellowstone Lake was a popular catch-and-cook site for anglers.

“People would stand on it with a fishing pole, catch a fish and then drop that fish into the thermal feature where it would cook,” said Nash.

He added: “Once it was determined there was arsenic in the geyser water, that practice stopped.”

The stupids are going to ruin that hobby for everyone...

Clearly all accidents should be banned.

There will probably be a "no fly" drone list soon.

Those could be banned too.

Yeh, they making a big deal outta that drone in the hot spring, but really no harm will come of it, they already have bunches of various chemicals in the spring, causing wild color variations, so some copper and steel and maybe lithium from the battery will be added, amounting to a handful in total....woopie doo, bunch of puzzies.....:issues::rofl:

Most RC aircraft need a decent runway. We also had to be a member of the AMA. It included insurance with membership. There were accidents some even fatal. There needs to be restrictions placed on drones in certain places.

I highly doubt an RC plane (hardly qualifies as a "drone") would harm a hot spring. The amount of fuel in those things is minuscule, perhaps a pint at most. The batteries can be toxic but will probably degrade slowly over time to no affect. There's no fish or any life in there other than microscopic stuff. But they'll treat it like someone dumped a truck load of nuclear waste in there, because government.

I was in California golfing at a nice course and there was a guy flying a four-rotor helicopter with a video camera on it (motion stabilized and everything) and was filming the golf course. Talked to him as he waited for us to tee off, and then about two hours later I'm looking for a lost ball in a sorta desert area and see the helicopter just sitting there on a bush.

After we finish I see the guy who was flying the helicopter, he was getting a golf cart. I casually asked him if he lost his chopper. He looks at me and says "Yes, and it's not funny. That thing cost a lot of money and I have no idea where it is, lost contact and it kept flying away from me."

I jumped in his cart and said "Drive that way." Took him right to it, he was freaking out.

Neighbor guy across the street showed up with a 600 buck 4 rotor drone with camera that can be controlled on 2-3 axis......battery was run down so it did not fly much, just enough to hover for a few seconds.....

I looked up on ebay....buy a good 4 rotor with cam for 200 bux at the cheapest, direct from Hong Kong, of course....where ELSE???

I don't think it will be that bad but what I think will happened is anything with 2 or more propellers will be banned. Also cameras mounted on remote flying devices will be banned for the general public.

Special licenses might be required to have either for business use.

I wish I had your expansive trust in the PTB to maintain a level of common sense when drafting legislation.

It's not about the damaging of springs, it's about the jerking of knees and the overreacting and the "well they can't be trusted, nanny will have to do it"ing...
