You may recall that I crated and shipped to Boston a Triumph TR-6 hard top:

Here's a pic of the crate as it was delivered to the shipper:

http://i57.tinypic.com/2ym92sk.jpg

A frame of 2 x 4s and 1 x 3 slats on the sides, top and bottom. with the hard top bolted down to a 2 x 4 with 1/4" lag bolts 1" deep into the 2 x 4, insulation on the top of the hard top in case anyhing got stacked on the crate, although it was clearly marked "DO NOT STACK!" and "TOP LOAD ONLY!".

Here's a pic of the cardboard box that was packed under the hard top with cleats to prevent horizontal movement and a nylon strap to prevent vertical movement:

http://i57.tinypic.com/nm0ylt.jpg

The hard top was delivered today with the box of parts missing, and you can move the top inside the crate. The box contained the side glass, attaching hardware, headliner, top bows, and new weatherstrip. Also, the back glass was loose, despite being installed as original and heavily taped. The contents of the box are as valuable as the top itself. I suspect structural damage to the top if it can now be moved inside the crate.

I estimate that the crate frame could have withstood over a 1,000 pound load. I can only surmise that the shipper broke the slats to allow the box to escape, then repaired the crate to hide the damage. A 24" x 20" x 12" box cannot pass through 4" slats.

The buyer would not insure the shipment, so he will collect 10 cents per pound. BTW, the shipper was Old Dominion Freight Lines.

shipping Old Dominion was the problem. FedEx freight never damages our stuff.

I agree...but the buyer chose the shipper because "they've been in business for such a long time". I don't think that necessarily means anything. GM has been in business a long time....

I may be alone on this, but I would absolutely have added plywood sides to what you have before I shipped it.

My thread reminds me of another shipment I made with UPS a few years ago: I shipped a NOS set of BB C2 Corvette side pipes and covers to a guy in Illinois. Side pipes are hard to pack because of their curves and length, but I used large PVC and plastic drain pipe to get the job done. You could have driven over them with a truck with no damage...but UPS found a way to damage them severely.

I had to sue UPS to make them pay their value of $4500 (that included the pipes, covers, all attaching hardware, etc.). UPS even had the audacity to calim that it's UPS Store wasn't part of UPS, so it wasn't liable.

So Larry.....

You were paid and the missing, and probably damaged package, is the buyer's problem because he did not have insurance on it? Is that correct?
Did he pay by Pay-Pal , credit card or certified check?

Unless you are prepared to add 100 pounds to the weight (it alrady weighed 219 pound, 85 for the top, galss, and hardware, the rest for wood) and therefore freight cost, I don't kmow if even then it could have withstood the fsmsge it apparently had to it. Assumong 3/4" plywood. of course (3-4 sheets). i

Buyer paid by certified check, deposited about 2 weeks ago. I think it's the buyer's problem because it was packed correctly, the shipped obviously is at fault since it can't explain how such a large box can pass through a 4" slat or how parcel 2 of 3 is missing (labelled as such) , and the buyer didn't purchase insurance although I recommended it.

Good. He might have had recourse if he used a credit card, but he is S O L, as the check has cleared.:seasix:
The dumbass should have insured it... Oh... and don't quit your day job...:D

I had 3 fenders shipped in by Fedex, all were new, tightly packed in carbboard, put into a box filled pith packing, and the box of course, sealed...

All 3 fenders suffered substantial damage and were not usable....

It wasnt even dent damage, it was drop damage on the corners....The boxes were always beat to hell.

UPS shipped one of my exhaust systems, it was delivered with the muffler about to fall out the main box, and one length of pipe actually hanging out...and them uffler had sustained damage due ot one of the pipes being psuhed through the muffler box, and into the casing....

I swear its like they roll this shit down a cliff....

You just have to make sure everything is insured :yesnod: I purchased a new hot tub cover. In great big letter on each side of the box "DO NOT USE FORK TRUCK"

I had to send back the two consecutive shipments because the trucking company "speared" my hot tub cover clear thru both sides of the box. :nutkick:

First one was insured by the manufacturer for actual value ( $300 ), second one was insured for $500 and the final one was insured for $1000 and that made it unharmed.

The delivery guy was very apologetic and had me sign the refusal line both times.

I had two Mercedes fenders shipped to MA from FL. They showed up in perfect shape. I had a C3 BB hood shipped in a Greyhound bus once. That made it unscathed also. You never know what is going to happen.

Not surprised. I've been on many freight docks and worked with trucking companies. You better insure your shipment at 'full value'. Trust me on this one.

3/4 might be overkill. The plywood provides cross-bracing like it would for a house. Could be chipboard instead. In addition, it keeps "curious" eyes from peeping what is in there and possibly bringing out the worst in people.

I know a guy that worked for UPS that said the workers there took special delight in handling packages marked "Fragile", or "This side up". In addition, you can buy tip indicators very cheap.

I have found that the best shipment method for stuff like this is a pallet on the bottom, and plastic wrap securing the product. If the product doesn't overhang the pallet, side damage is unlikely. Loading it underneath something is difficult at best.
