I do like it here, but I do not like the coffee. Every coffee I've tried has been bitter... Tim Hortons, Starbucks, Mcdonalds, hotels, even a local brew house.
Something in the air/water?

They get their water from lake erie:faint:
I guess that answers that :flush:

During the end of summer through fall you may notice a foul taste and odor in your water. This is an after taste do to the presence of algae in Lake Erie. We do remove, filter and disinfect algae in the production of finished water, but often the aftertaste will remain (see Aesthetic Qualities for details).

Are the Great Lakes postings considered plum assignments, just another place to serve, or terribly bad luck stints?

Depends on your point of view. The Southern border is getting invaded, so we send the people charged with defending the US to the Northern border.

Its a little more laid back as far as the electronics go, freshwater isnt as hsrsh, and boats are stored half the year.
The "crappy" billets are in Virginia.
there are far worse places to be, IMO.

Yes, search and rescue, law enforcement, and servicing aids to navigation.
make no mistake though, there are not nearly the assets devoted to the lake as the gulf. For instance, my area of responsibility here vs. Houston has roughly the same amount of coast line, but in Buffalo I only have 13 small boats, whereas Houston, we had 86 small boats and four patrol boats.

There have always been Coasties here, and they have always been down south, too.
The Coast Guard has many more jobs than border security, which is actually a CBP gig. The CG just lends assets, as does the Navy and Air Force.

It is cold. So cold that the illiums of Icelandia seem warm, and they are made of pure frozen helium. Our crew is huddled in what Buffalo calls domiciles, but they aren't something I'd wish on my worst enemy. Today our scouting party returned with no limbs whatsoever. It will take weeks for the nanobots to reassemble their biological systems. And this was on a rather balmy winter day. Soon reinforcements will come through, we can only hope. Soon.
