I've got around 1/2 a face cord of oak to split.
Don't want or need a gas powered one.
These electric models are 5 ton, supposedly good for 20" logs not more than 10" in diameter.
Am I better off renting one?

You'll need at least a 25 ton machine for oak.
Rent it and git-r-done....:yesnod:

Oak is a very tough/hard wood to deal with, rather deal with a dozen pine trees then one oak.

That's the one I was looking at too. The one by Homelite has tons of reviews, overwhelmingly positive too.
The only thing I'm wondering about is how they will work with live oak firewood. I have cut down several trees, one in the past week and another several in the past six months. I'm wondering how well they will work with the 5T splitter.
Live oak has some crazy grain patterns.

You are fortunate to have oak for firewood,as mentioned above it is a very hard wood and difficult to split especally if it is unseasoned.I always season oak for 1 year before I attempt to split it.....Your results may vary...........:)

Seriously don't waste your money on the electric one.
It'll end up in your garage, used once and you won't be able to sell it cause it sucks so bad.
25 ton gas powered at a minimum, 35 ton if you're splitting 15 cord per season.
You'll want to split other species too. Elm and alder will not split cleanly with a sub-powered machine. They are very stringy and you'll be working ten x's as hard to get it done.
I'd rent on if you can't borrow one for the little work that you have there.
My cousin has a 35 ton and it will split a log sideways.... He does 10 face cord per season though.

Thanks Jeff. I'll look into renting one.

Just saying maybe he is somebody from CF. :D
I just used an axe, wedges, and a sledge hammer. :smash:
Never put a wedge in the center of a big piece. Start near the edge.

I read somewhere that oak splits best from the center. Others split best from the edge.

I've split my share of oak. Split it green. A wedge at the center of a 18" diameter piece is a stuck wedge.

They work great but it's hard work for old bones.
Using a log splitter is a good workout too.

I've used this one and it is surprisingly easy to split logs with it. Top pic, far left.

You weren't kidding. :ack:
The stuff that was cut a few days ago split like a cut piece of taut twine. <pow!> Had to be careful of my junk when splitting that stuff. It's banjo-string tight.
The older stuff was much harder to split. It just didn't wanna give.
I wound up measuring just a hair under a full cord (face cord, technically, since practically none of the logs were 24" in length).
More campfire wood than I'll need in the next four years. :coolest:
I rented a 30T splitter for $58.00 (thanks Jeff :patriot:) and was glad I didn't scrimp and get a $300 5T electric jobbie that I'd probably never use again in the next decade, and trip over in my garage in the meantime.

It's not as easy as it would seem hu?
With two people it does go a lot faster, but flying solo it's a bit of a workout.
I ain't splitting wood. Don't have a FP anyway.
I've split a little wood. I might know a few useful things.

Good deal.
I'm obviously late to give input (although you did what I would have suggested). I have split a whole lot of firewood in my life. When I was younger, my old man and I used to sell firewood over the winters for some extra cash. After he became wheelchair bound, the work was all on me.
I wouldn't even begin to use 1 of those cheap things. :ack: Been looking at a new splitter myself but I'm torn because I'm down to 1 fireplace and don't need enough to justify a big one. Perhaps renting would be the better option in my case as well.
