Dear Black Guys In Elevators:

In this situation, sometimes women do this when white guys enter the elevator too. It's not just you people (yes, I went there).

It's a normal defensive reaction when a woman feels cornered and perhaps a tad vulnerable when a man she doesn't know enters a small space she occupies, from which there is no immediate escape. It really doesn't have anything to do with the color of the skin of the man entering that space.

Instead of getting mad and imagining yourself commencing to crush her skull for what is merely a normal (and just perhaps, dare I say it? non-racist reaction), how about doing what some of us white guys do in such a situation: recognize it for what it is, and do something that may decrease her level of apprehension; make eye contact, smile, say a polite comment about something innocuous like, I don't know, the weather or some shit) and give her some freaking space by walking over to the other side of the elevator.

Standing within striking distance of her, at the very edge of (if not actually intruding upon) her personal space, while blocking her path to the only way out with your body as you angrily cross your arms and imagine yourself going full retard against her "racist white woman ass" in your mind is probably about the worst thing you can do. In fact your body language just might cause her to get even a tad more on the defensive because frankly she has no idea what your intentions are... and, you've certainly given her no reason to see you as a non threat.

Seriously. We wish you would stop looking for white on black racism everywhere. We know it exists on some level, just like black on white racism exists on some level. It just doesn't exist quite on the level you seem to always be expecting it to.
