This was my first car. I've been having the itch, now that we're building G's car, to find and restore one and drop in an LS7. :D

A little pricey

Was considering an LSx conversion on my 86 before I sold it. Kits are available here:
MuscleRods 82-88 Monte Carlo LS Conversion Kit (http://www.brphotrods.com/products/82-88%20G%20body%20products/index.html)
For a Monte, but should work the same in the Cutlass.

That's an LT1 for me as mentioned in my post, not for him. :kick:

I saw a Chevelle a couple weeks ago with an LS. Same chassis. Fitting it in is not hard. The electronics and accessory mounting is complicated though.:cert:

I still have my first car. A 1974 Charger I bought in 1978. I have dreamed of dropping a Viper engine in it. :D
Sad truth is it will probably never see the road again.
If I have the time, I don't have the money.

I am estimating about $25k to make road ready a car worth only $15k when completed. :leaving:
Therefore, it sits. I am too emaotionally attached to get rid of it and lack the resources to do something with it.
Maybe after I die, it will become someone's barn find. :seasix:

is it rusted out ?
How bad of shape is it in ?
Obviously you are not keeping it to make money.
Do it for the love of the car.

It has some rust but is not a rusted heap. The mechanicals are where I can save money. I am fearless about repairs there. Body work is a foreign language to me. I truly see bodymen the way I see sculptors. It is both art and talent put together. I never tried it seriously, but I don't have to leap off a building to comprehend the end result.
From the year I bought it...

body work is time consuming but not really that hard to do
as long as the underside is good , it's pretty easy.
The longer you wait , the more rust eats it away:wow:

and now ?
I have not taken a picture of it in about 10 years. I have not even seen it in three. It is in storage...I think...I hope. :leaving:
I considered renting a trailer and shopping it to body shops some weekend.
at least it's not outside.
for the money you spent on storage you might have been able to get most of it done.

Back in them daze.....BPOC/Buick-Pontiac-Olds-Caddy had one bellhousing pattern, Chebby had their own, the transmissions will not interchange...LS is a bolt in for a chebby engine/trans swap.....
I set here scratching my ass, and want to say the bottom two bolts on each side WILL allow a bolt up, but it's the shape of the top bellhousing where it will not.....but not to quote me on that.....
And so for most guys the wiring is the bitch, as mentioned above.....I have put DPFI on 3 cars and one boat......well worth the effort.....
when doing my '72 vette, it was winter 97-98 and so all the LS engines were brand new and drop dead expensive.....:issues::sadangel:
I understand much cheaper NOW, no surprise, but not worth the effort as the present SBC runs fine, leave it alone.....:seasix::hurray:

My mom bought a brand new '78 Cutlass. It was black/black. Drove it for years. Rebuilt the engine once and kept driving it. I look back now and think it was a cool car. Small, comfy for people in the front seat (I don't now how Datawiz fit in one though...unless his growth spur came later in life lol). I think they look pretty cool. I still have the window sticker from it. I tried talking her into the Hurst/Olds version for that year. She needed a car that day and couldn't wait for a H/O order.

Odd you mention the Hurst/Olds 442's, an old drag race buddy had one, gold and white, and so he went through junkyards grabbing all the aluminum parts he could find from the DIESEL Olds cars.....and painting up to look stone bone stock on his car.....Hood, bumper?, fenders? fender liners? who knows what all else, kept it in my garage for a year or so.....it was a SWEET RIDE!!!
car looked stock as a stove, but....NOT!!!!!!!
