Kathryn's Report: John Earley and Michael Schlarb: North American P-51D Mustang, N1451D, Bridgewood Holdings LLC, fatal accident occurred July 04, 2014 at La Plata County Airport (KDRO), Durango, Colorado (http://www.kathrynsreport.com/2014/07/fatal-accident-occurred-july-05-2014-at.html)

I've heard of two possible reasons. Lack of pilot experience or lack of proper maintenance. I've also heard from other vintage plane crashes if they can recover a data plate. They will rebuild the plane.

Most of them were pilot only planes. A two seater going down is a real loss. :sadangel:

Not much left to rebuild.....:(

One of the victims in the crashes was a WWII pilot who was twice shot down in combat and also had the airport named after him. :sadangel:

Most of them have had the armor plating removed in the back to accommodate an additional seat and dual controls installed
