View Full Version : Polaris to unveil the all new 3-wheeled Slingshot - July 27th!

The three-wheeled road-legal sports motor vehicle Polaris has been teasing for months is finally "almost here." It looks like a new iteration of the Campagna T-Rex, or a Can-Am Spider you might actually want to ride.

Apparently the full reveal is coming on July 27th, with teasers like the one above dropping throughout the month. Looks like there's already a Slingshot Forum drumming up excitement for the new machine, and rumors are circulating that the three-wheeler will be powered by a 2.4 GM Ecotec, 1.0 Ford EcoBoost, or the 900cc engine from Polaris' RZR 900.

So it's really low to the ground. That should make it easier to pick up the pieces because other drivers are not going to see it.

I'm fully aware of the other makes/models, but I'm very much hoping the Slingshot will be more affordable.
I also like how the Slingshot seems to have been well thought out and more purpose built, rather than hacking up a Kawasaki and spreading the parts around.

Ever notice Europe can buy an Atom, or a Radical, or a Caterham as a completed car, but we have to buy them as "component cars" with all the assembly, insurance and registration hassles?
Selling a brand new car in the US requires things like ABS and seat belts that tighten themselves and crumple zones and smart airbags that turn on and off by themselves based on passenger weight and electronic driver aids and the ability to pass smog checks.
Make that car into a trike and suddenly its a motorcycle and you don't need to provide any of that shit.

I think that's a fair statement for Can-Am Spyder owners, as you sit on a bike seat, and steer with a bike handlebar. The Slingshot however, has a steering wheel, hand gear shifter, and car seats mere inches from the ground. It's just not a bike wannabe, regardless of how it will be registered or insured. It's just a fun new toy.
So there.
Addendum: After reading Hoog's response below, I realize I wasn't being mindful to the many different people that choose the Can-Am Spyder for their particular reasons. I fell into the trap that ...Whitepower... laid out, and should have just ignored it. I sincerely apologize, and I'm sure the Spyder is a cool toy.

The Slingshot's 2.4L dual overhead cam four cylinder motor produces 173 horsepower, and tips the scales after oil and fuel at 1725lbs. The math shakes out to 1 horsepower for every 9.97lbs. Let me say that again, 1hp per 9.97lbs. That is on par with some of the fastest cars on the market. The Lotus Elise, who often touts that "Light is Fast," steps to the table at 10.03lbs per horsepower. Leap way up the line to the Porsche 911 Carrera and that German road carver has 9.07lbs per horse. Head down the line to the "Working Man's Hero" track day car, the (2008) Miata, and that has 15.06lbs per horse.

http://forumfoundrycdn.com/nickj/utv/polaris/Polaris_Slingshot/Slingshot_Media/2015_Polaris_Slingshot-26.jpg
It was then mated it to a 5-Speed gearbox instead of their proven CVT clutching system so that the driver could have that more visceral feel of swapping cogs as the road gets tight and twisty.
http://forumfoundrycdn.com/nickj/utv/polaris/Polaris_Slingshot/Slingshot_Media/2015_Polaris_Slingshot-31.jpg
A high-strength steel spaceframe provides the anchor points for the engine, suspension and seats to be hung from. The Slingshot boasts a sport-tuned front suspension featuring double-wishbones, coil over gas-filled shocks; and one of the beefiest swaybars that I have seen on a car from the factory in a while. The front end assures that you will stay flat in the corners. The drive end of the Slingshot is taken care of by the single Kenda "Slingshot" 799 out back, that is affixed to the car with a lightweight aluminum swingarm, driven by a carbon fiber reinforced blet, and kept on the ground by, what appears to be a single coil over.

http://forumfoundrycdn.com/nickj/utv/polaris/Polaris_Slingshot/Slingshot_Media/2015_Polaris_Slingshot-10.jpg
In this initial offering of the Slingshot, you will be able to get it in two different trim levels. The Base model and the SL. The base model will get, obviously the basic equipment as outlined above. You get the suspension, the Slingshot branded tires, the motor coupled with the 5-speed trans, and in the immortal words of Henry Ford, "You can have it in any color as long as it is Titanium Metallic." Wait... Well yeah, it comes in Titanium Metallic. $19,999
http://forumfoundrycdn.com/nickj/utv/polaris/Polaris_Slingshot/Slingshot_Media/2015_Polaris_Slingshot-7.jpg
If you are looking at that red with green eyes of envy lust and desire, you will need to opt for the SL model which will come in the stunning Slingshot Red Pearl. This option will nab you some creature comforts that the base model does not afford you. To start you will get a blade windscreen to keep the bugs out of your teeth while you virtually fly down the road. Next, the base model's 8 spoke, 17" X 7" front, and 18" X 9.5" rear wheels are swapped out for a set of premium forged aluminum 10 spoke, 18" X 7.5" front, and 20" X 9" wheels in the rear. Rubber sizes change a little as well. The Base gets 205/50R17 up front and 265/35R18 in the rear. The SL's premium wheels are wrapped with 225/45R18 up front and 255/35R20 in the rear. $23,999

http://forumfoundrycdn.com/nickj/utv/polaris/Polaris_Slingshot/Slingshot_Media/2015_Polaris_Slingshot-44.jpg
Lastly, the SL gets a media console in place of the cubby on the base model. This media console will allow you to control the 6-speaker audio system so you can listen to your favorite radio station, or your own music with the help of a USB input. The system also features Bluetooth Integration so that you can hook up your phone, comms or whatever you like wirelessly via Bluetooth. The 4.3" LCD display is not just for show. The display is there to show you what is coming from behind when reversing through the lens of the backup camera! Now that is lux.

How much snow you folks expecting this winter? :bigears:
This is going to be a big snowfall year based on what the mud beetles are doing. :yesnod:
Would not surprise me if we didn't get a couple 6+ inch snows this year.
Local dealership just called me - they have two in. Heading up there to go check it out.

Good gravy, yet another "motorcycle" without any commitment. Takes 0 skill to drive, doesn't lean well in turns. Looks like a great platform for Nancy boys. For any to consider it, please move back to your Mom's basement, sack up for a year or two, come back into the light and then go buy a Harley like REAL men do. More mamby pamby shit than I can handle in a day. Go back to crying in your snot rags.:kick::kick:

I happen to have the transcript of that conversion:
Buddy #27: "Hey man wanna grab a beer at lunch?"
Rob: "Hells ya man I'm in!!!"

I love it because with no corvette, I think this would be a fun little ride and track car at the NCM. Also, with being so low you get a better sense of speed than one if those stupid can am things. Those, are the nancy boys. To me, this looks like a hoot, especially after putting a supercharger on it. I think of this as the poor mans Ariel Atom

Rob, you're killin' me when I'm on a good drunken rant!!! I thought my rant was let's say, almost poetic! In all honesty, I could care less about them or who owns one. I just wanted to rant for a minute. I was in the Jim Beam pretty good last night!:D
I love it. I will not buy from the local dealer but we already have a quote from a dealer in IL that has the best prices on the Slingshot forum.
I hope to drive one next week to get a feel and may be ordering mine after.
