I had one back 3-4 years ago. Was my daily driver on a 50mile daily commute for about a year...no A/C...no HEAT, rear window was never up more than 100 feet. Had 15psi of oil pressure cold, with 20W50 in it...0psi hot. It leaked violently...
But it never "broke down". There were 2 incidents where I had it towed, neither of which it turned out were legit...one, I had a sudden loss of power and flickering of the lights...turned out the electric choke wire had come off and was grounding the alternator to the block.....I shoulda caught that on the side of the road...
2nd was, it suddenly lost all forward power...I thought id lost the trans, had it towed....found out my foot had hit the Hi-Lo flag shifter next to the seat and kicked it into neutral...oops.
It had a shit ton of rust, no floors...
Piston #4 started breaking apart, to the point that you could see the top ring about 40% around from the top...it kept closing up my plug gap....but it didnt burn oil...very odd.
That said...they were tough. AMC 360, Dana 44's front and rear, NP229 T-case, 727TF automatic (bomb proof), Saginaw steering..comfy seats....
I dunno...just fun to look at, drive, and wrench on...this one looks 100X better than my old clunker ever was.

Definitely awesome vehicles. I spent many hours in the back of one in my childhood, and I've always wanted one.

If I still get a half a chub tomorrow from it..Im going ot make an offer for it...assuming he comes back with good news about the things Ive asked him....oil PSI, rear window function, rust....if its all good, Im going to offer 2000 cash.
Figure...I paid 400 for my first one, put about 15000 miles on it, and less than 400 in repairs...and sold it for 400 dollars...as a parts vehicle, complete..needing engine work.

Wow, Red... You had quite some luck with that truck, despite all those issues. :seasix:

I've got a set of wheels from one if anyone is interested. 15x8 aluminum turbine style, 6 bolt.
We had an '82 back in the early 90s. When I left the Navy in '93 I drove it from Washington state to Atlanta. I called it my four wheel drive Cadillac. It got 9.5 MPG consistently so I sold it shortly after we got here.
I've always been a fan of those! Great looking rides.

Guy got back in touch with me..he wants 2800.
NEeds 1 floorboard replaced, needs paint, no A/C, and needs various other things.
The paint is actually what kills it for me...you cannot remove the wood trim without destroying at least one section, and its spendy to replace, and the wood paneling is NLA...but 3m makes a replacement set, just under a G for the parts...then the nightmare of putting it on...plus it needs paint...ugh.
Not worth it...They used good paint, ill find another one, for the same or less money with good paint one day...

Would love to have one of those Honcho pickup trucks! I had a high school buddy who used to take my boggin' in his back in the day.

This guy here in Texas does a nice job of finding very high quality examples: Wagonmaster - used and pre-owned Jeep Grand Wagoneers (http://www.wagonmaster.com/)
Might be a bit higher than what you are looking to spend.

Between 40k and 60k?!?
Um yeah . . . I'm guessing that's a tad over Red's budget. :barnbabe:
