Good story.
Was it stolen because he parked in a crosswalk? :leaving:
I understand that's about average time for Detroit PD to solve a case.

It was a '79. Looks solid silver in the old pics. Silver over black in the new pics. I still love a '78 Pace Car or solid color '78 (black) car for appearance. I think it is one of the best looking Corvettes ever produced. Of course, I was in the 14-15 yr. old range when they were new and fairly exotic to us in a small town.
She has bangs, too....:hump:

If it was insured and they paid out, it's not his car anymore, right?

I remember when the '78 Pace Car came out. I was working at the hardware store. One pulled up and parked in front.
It was AWESOME
the crowd around it was as if the 2nd coming of Jesus had occurred in front of my eyes.
it was the one of the times as a kid when I saw a vette up close and personal.
I was 18 y/o
I wanted one
I wanted one NOW
I got one. 18 years later. My 1st vette. A silver '96 CE Coupe.

That is my understanding.
They recovered a midyear a few yrs. back that had been stolen many yrs. ago. The guy had let his insurance lapse. When the car was recovered it had received a frame off NCRS level restoration. It was returned to him. The previous owner was SOL and lost big $

Curious as to HOW, they tracked/found it.....messed up S#?? and they check the engine/frame???
that shit is SO easy to fake, fool even NCRS at Kiss. Fl. or Bloomington.....

I was thinking the same thing. Wouldn't it belong to the insurance company?
Maybe there was never a payout. :bilmem:

A guy here at work bought a '78 Pace Car new. He told me that he had the tires removed when it was new and put them in storage in a preservative. He said he sold them a couple of years ago to a restoration group for $10K.

Who knew Goodyear Eagle GT's would clock premium dollars? :confused5:

On the trivia tip, those famous polished aluminum wheels first premiered at the 1973 Paris Auto Show on the AeroVette 4-Rotor concept car. They didn't appear on production 'Vettes until 1978.

The news reporter said it was still in 'pretty good shape' but judging from the pictures, it's pretty roached out.
Obviously they have never worked on a C3 before. :leaving:

I'm betting he can buy it back from the insurance company for what they gave him to cover the loss.

I have a friend with one that has less than 100 miles on it with the plastic still on the seats and window sticker still on the window.
He's been trying to sell it for $25K.
In the Corvette world, there are HUNDREDS of 78 pace cars with less than a thousand miles on them.
Tires only
or tires & wheels?
I believe it was tires only; not positive though.

Phil, you maybe remember an old name from WAY past, Donna Cayton, was the web master for the Jax Car Council.....so a few months ago I got reminded about the Council and her being web master, and so she dropped off the list as being down to 20% of breathing capacity....emphasima from smoking....nice lady, damn shame.....anyway, the connection to this thread is that she bought a '78 Pace car from a guy across the street, long since moved away......and had it painted by her son in the body shop business, from Orange to Burgundy......she paid like 5 grand for the car, and sold it for 13 grand....maybe ten years ago, kept it for some years.....
Her father used to be skipper on the Kennedy? I think, been a while....

If I had the extra money to waste. I'd buy it and drive the thing. I know you are paying a premium for the low miles and condition. But maybe it is no worse than taking a similar hit and depreciation like on any new car.

I remember when they came out, ad dealers were selling them to each other for astronimical prices. Then the market tanked. I thought they were still not worth much...?

And folks like Mr Cooool's friend "put them up"
the buzz was...they were gonna be worth a fortune some day :island14:
.....but back to the original story. Assuming the guy gets his car back to Detroit, anyone want to lay odds on how long it takes to get stolen.....again?

Perazckly. Which is kinda funny in a way, because if you've ever seen a 78 Pace Car new. they look like they were assembled, and in particular painted, like The Three Stooges did it: Orange peel, runs, dirt in the paint everywhere. And 220 HP.

AND like every other 'cool' car over the decades, the either wound up in museums OR as 'collector cars' of the well done HOTROD crowd.....
just like mid 30's Ford convertibles with STEEL bodies and modern shit.....
or like any other car through the decades.....resto's are worth next to nothing, the museums are full of them....even perfect undriven cars....how many really CARE anymore??? prices are coming down.....

He MAY have been paid about 5K back then, and now that car is worth around 20K give or take a couple because of the mileage. So who should profit? ...the insurance co. or the rightful owner? :bigears:
BTW....when the 78 anniversary edition came out GM said it was only making 500 of them, and the frenzy was on. But trust GM to dump that idea and make another few thousand of them. People were really P.O., especially if they paid through the nose for one.
Basically it was a smog car and SLOW so no real Vette head performance guys even wanted one, just the investors.....snicker, snicker. Looked good on them!
If I recall
GM made one Pace Car for each dealer, about 6000 at the time.
The anniversary car was different. Don't know about the production #'s on them.
I could be RONG on all this :island14:

Doesn't come down to that. The insurance company owns the car. Fairness has nothing to do with it.

Ah, but it does come down to fairness. When there is a theft or other total loss, the insurance company buys the car (or rights to the car) for what it would have been worth pre-theft or pre-accident. It would be no different than if the car owner had put it up for sale and the insurance company bought it, except the ins. company also pays for the TT&L. At the moment that transaction is concluded, the seller is fully compensated and that's it. The ownership is fairly transferred to the ins. company. If the car is found later, the rightful owner IS the ins. company. They hold the title, not the previous owner, the theft victim.
