Pretty sure it has to do with Jesse and his bout with cancer. Ever since then they (CF) have raised money for SJ. :cert:

Jesse (cor08vette) Admin of CF, is a cancer survivor thanks to St Jude. As such, he has made it his life mission to raise money for them.
No, it wasn't "before the museum", only since he was put in charge of the forum (circa 2004?) did he deem it the forum's official charity.
Cruise In was an event organized and hosted by the NCM, itself a nonprofit charity.
Only one year (CI8 I think) did Jesse attend and start fundraising there for St Jude, which was met with some hostile reactions, created a divide among those who attended, and though by no means the sole cause, certainly helped trigger the declining attendance in the years that followed.

Ive donated to SJ a few times, never because of CF, or CI, or anything, simply because I wanted to, certainly not to get some tacky forum tag next to my name....

The way they write off the donations is actually in violation of the law.

Not to be a prick, but i'm pretty sure this has been hashed over again and again. Just wondering do we really not have anything better to do on this forum than bitch about another forum?

Why? Are they not a legitimate 501 (c) (3) or other charitable organization?

No, but it seems all we're doing is bitching about people and places that don't have anythign do to with us. 24 fkin people showed up at Barn Raising, when's the last time we saw any new members?
Can't we be the "bigger" forum or people, and move on?

Well, appreciate the info......I picked up on this from another thread here, and decided to ask, that's all.....last time I was at NCM was maybe '98-99 and a whole bunch of internet folks were organized and driving from all over at same weekend.....it MAY have preceded the forming of CF, I not sure....but a local vette person and I drove up there in his yellow '91 ZR1.....
I bought a brick, and have a couple pix....I suppose it's still there.....damn if I know though.....
what with all the recent activity there, I just asked.....I don't have much money to travel that sort of distance, much less able to drive that much any more....so other destinations are more in line for wife and I......

Cliffs -
Forum use to raise tons of money for the NCM.
Jessie came on board and started raising money for SJ.
Everything came to a head at CI 2008 when instead of raising money for the museum, there were fundraisers at the Hampton and possibly on NCM property for SJ. For the first time, the 50/50 money that year went to SJ instead of the NCM.
People were pissed because no more money was being raised for the Museum.
Jessie asked for volunteers to spearhead new fundraising event for the Museum.
I and Bucky volunteered. I was appointed CF ambassador to the NCM. I worked with Adam and came up with a bunch of items and special events to auction off. First auction was for a private plant tour that went for about $1K as I recall.
In public we were encouraged to go after this.
In private we were told not to put up auctions when ever there was a SJ fund raiser going on. Jessie believed that would take money away from SJ.
There was always a SJ fund raiser going on. We were asked repeatedly to shut down our efforts.
NCM started asking why there were no fund raisers under the new program.
Jessie banned me for a couple of weeks over some nonsense and while banned, he went into my, and Bucky's PM's and deleted all the PM's where he had said negative things about the NCM and about restricting forum efforts to raise money for them.
Jessie didn't know that I had already printed off the damning PM's.
Being very pissed off about the illegal invasion of my privacy and fed up with my inability to raise any money for the museum, I shared with the NCM all of the information that had transpired.
The next day I was perma banned from the CF.

Went and found them on the thumb drive, they transferred from an old computer somehow, I know the trip was as above, even though the date of the pix was changed to the d/load date of the thumb drive....oh well....

Why? Are they not a legitimate 501 (c) (3) or other charitable organization?
They are. But CF provides write off receipts for 100% of the money donated. You're only allowed to give receipts for the value paid over market value. So if you buy an exhaust system, pay them $800, get you write off, and the value of the system is $1000; you're not entitled to a donation receipt.
If you pay $1200, then you're entitled to a receipt of $200.

And they're doing under St. Jude's name, which puts their 501c3 in jeopardy.

Your timing is correct, as is your recollection. That year, between my badges, shirts, and the auctioning off of the banners donated by yell01 (Frank) and WNeal (Bill), we raised $11,000 alone of that years take. After that year, the fundraising got real, and they were in the big $ mode from then on.
It was at that time that others were pissed that we raised so much for St. Jude, and ignored the NCM, our official host for the events. When I left CF and joined VB, I never looked back, and have donated all badge/shirt money since then to the NCM. That being said, thanks for the reminder, will send a $140 check tomorrow for the badges/shirts from this forum this year. :cert:

I think the CF started in '99. I was at the NCM for an event in '99 or 2000. Several forum members were going to be there for the same even and invited everyone to gather in the Baymont parking lot for a get together. That one wasn't 'official'. They started the official one the next year, I think. It was also the only one I ever attended. I remember Snowman, the guy from Marietta with the postal biz, the short guy from Boston that went to work for Microsoft - Brian? A couple more members. Ram Air Tony and another, I met at the assembly plant picking up their ZO6s. I stayed pretty much in the C1/C2 section and only lurked OT. The C1/C2 guys wouldn't budge from their houses for the CI and I didn't know anyone in the C5 crowd.

I still remember the last CI I went to. You and I put up the use of our cars for the auto-x. I had to fight Jesse tooth and nail to get the money to go to the NCM and not SJ. I think SJ is a great organization but as a Corvette community, shouldn't be be supporting our own, at least in part.
As much as I hate to say I agree with Phil, he's 100% right on the events that went down when he and Bucky tried to raise money for the NCM. Jesse got all butt hurt that his precious SJ may loose a little bit of money.
