So last weekend I slipped and fell off the transom of my boat while i was up on the trailer and fell about 8 feet backwards on the asphalt. I put my hands out to break my fall and shattered my left wrist. Finally went to see the orthopedic specialist and went in for surgery yesterday. The socket was destroyed so they had to put titanium plates and pins in it. So no boating,no fishing, no motorcycle, no guitar,no shooting, no racing,no working on the car.
You never realize how dependent you become on having both hands. The only good thing is I'm right handed and i am lucky i wasnt paralyzed from the fall.

8' is a long way to fall, much less backwards. How long until you have enough functionality with the left wrist/hand to be back in the game for the most part?

I'm sure there will be lots of PT on the way.

Been there, but didn't need the surgery. It sucks, but I was always thankful it wasn't a foot, leg, or ankle, where you need to walk on. That is a major PIA.

And you will be surprised how much you will still do.

Is the cast higher than your elbow?

Mine was, brutal suckage. They do that so you can't bend anything.

:sadangel: Damnit man, just damnit.....Similar thing happened to me, off the deck of my 20' Flying Scot sailboat.....just pulled into the lot, finished unstepping the mast, so I hopped up to do some minor shit, feet out on slick deck over backwards some 5-6' to the ASSfault.....hit flat on my back, and only thing I remember thinking was 'TUCK YOUR HEAD" the advice of my old HS gym teacher......but the fall knocked my out, the ex was home being under the weather, and Larry/Julie thought I was dead, on account of I did not move for two minits, so they said......Larry drove home, I laid in the back seat just sore as shit.....

later that fall, maybe 5 months later, I started rectal bleeding, so to have my gut stitched just inside the sphincter ......talk about a PIA for a week or better till I could walk......Doc told me it MAY have healed on it's own, but I insisted on USING IT~~~~~!!......:issues::rofl:

Damn deck shoes not what they cracked up to be.....give em 1/2 a chance they put another crack in your ass, did mine.....:issues::sadangel:

Chuck, I remember your saw accident, how has your recovery been? This x-ray is after the emergency room set it, but before surgery. I tried taking a pic of the broken wrist when I did it but i tore the tip of my thumb off and the blood prevented me from using my thumb.
The bone on the right is the broken one.

The surgeon was glad I opted for surgery since the socket was broken in multiple places.
He said if I had just set it, it wouldn't have healed right.
There is a T shaped plate that connects the pieces of the socket to the radius.

The docs were shocked at how little damage I did to the rest of me. They didnt believe I didnt hit my head and ordered a cat scan. Then chest x rays, arm x rays, wrist x ray, ultrasound, and dr jellyfinger checked to make sure my internals were ok. I really am lucky I didnt break my neck.

They set the bone and wrapped it in an ace bandage on a splint. I finally had it set Thursday night. The pain yesterday was brutal but is manageable today, taking oxy w/advil.

Be careful with the oxy, it's easy to become dependent on the "euphoria" as it works quite well for pain relief. The surgeon prescribed it after both my shoulder surgeries last year. You mentioned Advil, I found Aleve worked better for me.

Now that you're down to only your dominant hand/arm, make sure you don't over use it.

Good luck and ask your surgeon about vitamin and mineral supplements to promote bone growth and healing.

Very true on the Oxy

After tearing up my ankles back in May 2012...I went through a few bottles of the "tabs"
I was in the middle of building my home so I took the chance.
Happily, I've not had one in close to a year
And I have a full bottle of them little devils

Watch them
When the bottle starts talking to you: "hello, happy pills over here"...
You know it's time to stop.

I broke the same wrist in 1977 when I was in first grade. Threw a cast on, healed up, no issues ever. As an adult, holy crapsicle. Much different healing process. I am supposed to be holding it flat and applying pressure to straighten it out so I just waxed the Miata. I am 43.

later that fall, maybe 5 months later, I started rectal bleeding, so to have my gut stitched just inside the sphincter ......talk about a PIA for a week or better till I could walk......Doc told me it MAY have healed on it's own, but I insisted on USING IT~~~~~!!......:issues::rofl:
:Are you sure it was related to the fall ?

He will just have to make do with the strange. :lol:sounds like he just swapped hands

PT sucks, but I have to do it.Prick Tease ?

Just got the clean bill of health from the Doc. Just need to keep going to physical therapy and working the frozen ligaments loose.

Been there. done that and I only fell about 5'. I was told you could hear my bones break when I hit the asphalt.

Hang in there and give it time to heal properly. Good thing you stll can lift a shot glass. :shots:

Glad you're healing well and they don't foresee any major long term issues.

That's great to hear George :hurray: Keep up with the PT and acknowledge the small gains every day/week instead of " I used to be able to do this" :yesnod:

Got the clean bill of health Friday, all healed and I don't need to wear the splint anymore. Now I just have to keep going to physical therpay twice a week and using a splint a few times a day to stretch the tendons and ligaments.

Hang in there, you are doing great, considering all the scrap iron you have in that wrist. I did 3 hours a day for 3 months before they let me drive a stick shift, and then I still could not walk worth a damn . I still think using the clutch was the best therapy I did.

That looks like, uhh Fun :leaving: It will be well worth the discomfort to regain the movement :yesnod:

Good to hear you are back on the bike. With my shoulder, I was at 18 months ( including winters ) between riding
