A heartbroken pooch who lost his family in the fury of Hurricane Sandy was reunited with them 18 months later in an amazing turn of fate.
Lucas, whose real name is Reckless, was found as a stray in Monmouth County, New Jersey back in October.
Charles and Elicia James were stunned when they walked into the Monmouth County SPCA last week and spotted their beloved pup.
“I told my wife ‘That dog looks like Reckless’ and she said ‘It is Reckless!’” Charles James told The News. “He started jumping three feet in the air and we started crying.”
Reckless bolted from the family’s Keansburg home during Hurricane Sandy. The pooch was wearing a collar with identification.
“I saw his collar sticking in the fence,” said James, a father of three. “It couldn’t have been a worse case scenario.”
James searched the “goofy and loving” pit bull but came up empty. He checked in at the Monmouth County SPCA and other shelters.
But the pup was not microchipped.
Meanwhile they were displaced from their home due to Hurricane damage.
The family reluctantly agreed to look for a new dog last week in time for daughter Alexandra’s 10th birthday.
Finding Reckless was the best gift of all.
“They have been sleeping together in the bed ever since,” he said.
