View Full Version : So this morning I found out
Had a phone call from my cardiologist at 7:00. I had a sress test yesterday and it seems I didn't make an A on it. Abnormal readings blah blah, going to have to schedule a heart catheterization ASAP. :ohnoes:  With the history of pad that I have I should have seen this coming.

The good news is that your doctor caught it, you will live, and the operation is painless. The bad news is that your lifestyle is about to change drastically. (This is from someone who has BTDT.) You must now exercise regularly, eliminate all risk factors (smoking, etc.), and eat a very healthy diet (low fat everything, almost no fried foods, etc.) You may have to take medication the rest of your life, and you will need to see your doctor regularly for check-ups.
The really good news is that you will feel better than ever and that you are practically guaranteed to live a long and healthy life (if you change your lifestyle, etc.). Let me emphasize how much better you will feel--you may be actually healthy for the first time in your life.
I view my heart problems as a blessing that changed my life.

I view my heart problems as a blessing that changed my life.thank you Spence. :seasix: I have been taking plavix for 4 stints I've had since 2009. I quit smoking almost a year ago. When I lost 140 lbs back in 1980 to 1983 I stopped eating much fried foods and I've never eaten much salt. (High BP) is something I've never had. My mothers side of the family has had uber heart and artery related issues and I get to thank them for mine. :seasix: I do wish that I would have stayed on some type of cholesterol meds but the side effects were horrible for me until I started Crestor.

You're certainly welcome. I guess everyone in our position has trouble finding the right medicine that we tolerate okay. There are so many out there that eventually the right one or ones are found. Of course, with most heart-related meds, you're on them for the rest of your life.
Since your heart problems are genetic, then your outlook is not as rosy as most. You may have to follow a very rigid diet and lead a formulaic lifestyle that may not be very pleasant at first. But once you settle into it and it becomes second-nature to you, then all is good. BTW, quitting smoking eliminated the biggest risk factor there is.

I did.
Quintuple by-pass and all for me at 55, still hanging around. Best of luck with all that, with today's medical technology, hopefully it's a piece of cake for you. :seasix:

If stents can't be inserted, you'll be in surgery the next morning. I hope it doesn't come to that, because..that...hurts...like...Hell. And when they tell you to get out of bed the following morning and start walking up and down the hall, tell them to pizz off. You need rest.
BTW, if you wonder why you feel so cold when you wake up, it's because they packed you in ice. Little things like that they don't tell you.

Well stents are for whimps. Triple bypass earliest Friday. :sadangel:
That's exactly what happened to me in 2001. Everyone has a different recovery time from a bypass operation. My next-door neighbor, who was and is fat and out of shape, had a quadruple bypass about the same time, and he was riding a bike 2 days after the operation, back at work in 5 days, and bragging about how much better he felt.
Athletic me, on the other hand, couldn't eat after the procedure, I dropped 20 pounds, couldn't have a shirt or a bed sheet touch my chest because it felt like it was on fire, didn't know where I was, my bowels got impacted and made me sicker, and I was off work for 6 weeks.
I'm not warning you of the horrors, I just want to let you know it's possible, but not likely. The reading material the hospital gives you after the operation is bullshit: "Start walking the hospital halls the day after your operation, and do this several times daily." Do what you feel like doing, and don't push yourself.
And, by all means, don't be shooting a shotgun for a while. That can be nasty.

A bypass is better and they have it down to a normal routine these days. They probably do more of these than any other surgery. I honestly think a collapsed stent killed my 40 yr. old cousin.

Try to have the surgery scheduled for as early in the morning as possible. That way you've got a better shot at the doctors being sober.:hide:

Thank gawd and baby jeebus for Zanx. when you feel normal ( or what passes for normal in regards to me) sitting around the hospital bites. Ii
Wow, missed this. Best of luck . My dad had his tripple as a result of a heart attack, he was in his 60s and was less than a week after he passed a stress test. He's still kickin' almost twenty years later. I remember him saying his legs, where they got the replacement veins, hurt worse than his chest.
Pretty routine surgery these days.

Because of my use of plavix it will be possibly Friday before they can cut. More than likely Monday before they do. I'll be here maybe as late as next Friday. :sadangel:
