In an apparent attempt to defend racist comments he made in a recently published New York Times profile, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy held a press conference on Thursday where he explained some of his earlier, racist remarks - specifically, one in which he said he often wonders whether 'negroe' were better of during slavery.

'I’m not saying that I thought they should be slaves. I’m not even saying they was better off,' Bundy said in his speech. 'I’m a wondering if they were better off?'

The rancher then reiterated some of the points he made in his previous speech.

'I’m a wondering. Cliven Bundy is wondering about the black community. Are they better off with their woman aborting their children? Are they better off with their young men in prison? Are they with the older people on the sidewalks in front of their government-issued homes with a few children?' he rambled.

'Are they better off, are they happier than they was when they was in the south in front of their homes with their chickens, and their gardens, and their children around them - and their men having something to do?'

Bundy has become something of a celebrity in his frontier stronghold since his showdown over land with federal authorities earlier this month.

Officials had tried to round up Bundy's cattle and evict him on April 12 after 20 years of not paying taxes. However they were forced to give up after a militia of several hundred people, some of them armed with sniper rifles, turned up and threatened to open fire.

The incident has propelled Bundy into a position of authority among those who believe that they are being harassed by an 'overreaching' federal government. Bundy has leapt on to this platform, holding daily news conferences next to the armed checkpoint on the driveway of his ranch.

On Saturday he made a rambling speech littered with racist remarks to a gathering made up of local supporters and a few scattered members of the press.

During his speech, Bundy shared a story of driving through a housing project in Las Vegas, according to a report by the New York Times, beginning his tale with the words: 'I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro.'

He said: 'In front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids - and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch - they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

'And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do? They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton.

And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.'

Mr. Bundy, a 67-year-old father-of 14 and registered Republican, is accused of not paying federal grazing taxes for his cattle for 20 years, and reportedly owes the government $1million.

A federal taskforce has been setup to deal with him, Senate majority leader and Nevada Democrat Harry Reid said last week, branding Bundy a 'domestic terrorist'.

The Bureau of Land Management tried to round up Bundy's cattle earlier this month but were forced to back down after hundreds of supporters, some carrying automatic weapons and sniper rifles, threatened violence.

Reid accused the militia supporting Reid of deliberately putting women and children into the firing line so that, in the event of violence, they got hurt first ensuring the worst possible headlines.

Meanwhile Bundy has warned that he will never back down down from his fight.

'They will come, and I don't care,' he told MailOnline earlier this month. 'The people and citizens of America will win this fight. We have God on our side and we will be better prepared for them next time.'

He said supporters from across the U.S., many of the armed a prepared to defend themselves, were heading for the remote town of Bunkersville, about 80 miles from Las Vegas in southern Nevada.

He said: 'People have been mobilized by what they have seen and heard and they will come here because they see it as their right to defend the land.'

Bundy won the first round of his fight with agents from the Bureau of Land Management after they released several hundred cows they had seized as part of a long running dispute over grazing rights in Nevada.

Craig Leff, from the Bureau of Land Management, told the Times: 'The gather is now over. Our focus is pursuing this matter administratively and judicially.'

Fears of an armed confrontation with dozens of armed militia who had camped out in a field leading to Bundy's ranch led federal officials to call off their operation.

Supporters of Bundy hailed the decision as a victory - but the decision was taken in part because Clark County Sheriff's feared violence could erupt at any moment.

Many of the militia, who wore camouflage clothing and stalked the roads around the Bundy home carrying automatic weapons, said they were prepared to take on the federal agents in a fire fight.

One was overheard boasting that he had two agent in his gun sight and could 'take them down'.

The dispute between Bundy and federal land managers began in 1993 when he stopped paying monthly fees of about $1.35 per cow-calf pair to graze public lands that are also home to imperiled animals such as the Mojave Desert tortoise.

Land managers limited the Bundy herd to just 150 head on a land which the rancher claims has been in his family for more than 140 years.

The government also claims Bundy has ignored cancellation of his grazing leases and defied federal court orders to remove his cattle.

Last week, they began an operation to seize his cattle prompting the stand off and mini invasion by militia members from California, Arizona, Montana and Utah to rush to his support.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie was able to negotiate a resolution after talking with Bundy.

It has not been revealed if Bundy would pay the estimated $1.2million he owes to the Government.

The dispute that ultimately triggered the roundup dates to 1993, when the bureau cited concern for the federally protected tortoise in the region.

The bureau revoked Bundy's grazing rights after he stopped paying grazing fees and disregarded federal court orders to remove his animals.

The fight between Bundy and the Bureau of Land Management widened into a debate about states' rights and federal land-use policy.

He has a point about paying people not to work, i.e. welfare being bad, but he certainly has done himself and those who support him a disservice.

They're afraid of cutting their own political throats. :yesnod:

Ol' boy Bundy's discussion would have been infinitely more effective had he centered his remarks on the 151,014,000 Americans getting government benefits instead of specifically mentioning Black racial-ethnic minorities.

Rancher ripped on racist remarks: 'I'm right'

Remarks have drawn widespread condemnation from Democrats, Republicans alike

UPDATED 1:22 PM EDT Apr 25, 2014

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/onedef92/Cliven-Bundy-jpg_zps6172b50d.jpg

(CNN) - Cliven Bundy -- the Nevada rancher turned conservative folk hero for bucking the federal government's attempts to stop his cattle from grazing on public land -- admits he doesn't understand the bipartisan uproar over his comments suggesting blacks might have been better off under slavery.

But in a contentious interview Friday on CNN's "New Day," Bundy stood by his remarks, saying he's not a racist but only somebody who speaks his mind, perhaps using politically incorrect language.

"Maybe I sinned, and maybe I need to ask forgiveness, and maybe I don't know what I actually said, but when you talk about prejudice, we're talking about not being able to exercise what we think. ... If I say Negro or black boy or slave, if those people cannot take those kind of words and not be (offended), then Martin Luther King hasn't got his job done yet," he told anchor Chris Cuomo on Friday, adding, "We need to get over this prejudice stuff."

Bundy brought up civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, who was arrested in December 1955 for not giving up her seat on a public bus to a white man. The arrest sparked the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott.

Bundy said King would have wanted Parks to sit anywhere on a bus. Bundy said, "I want her to sit anywhere in the bus and I want to sit next to her anywhere in the bus."

In one exchange with Cuomo, Bundy said, "I don't know how to talk about these ethnic groups. ..."

"Then don't," Cuomo said.

For two decades, Bundy's cattle have fed off government-owned land without paying grazing fees like thousands of other ranchers. He claims he won't do business with the federal government because, in his view, the Constitution doesn't say Americans can't use land owned by the federal government. He said he'd be willing to talk with state and local authorities..

"I'll be damned if this is the property of the United States. They have no business here," he said on "New Day."

"This is a sovereign state, the sovereign state of Nevada. The federal government has nothing to do with public land in Nevada." He said other ranchers are as frustrated as he is.

This stance made him a darling of some conservatives in the media and Republican circles upset over what they've deemed government overreach. Militiamen rallied by the side of the 67-year-old rancher as federal rangers tried to force him off his land.

Bundy won that standoff, but he didn't stop talking.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, he recalled driving by a public housing project in North Las Vegas, Nevada, and seeing "at least a half-dozen (black) people sitting on the porch, they didn't have nothing to do."

"Because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?" he added in comments first reported by The New York Times and later seen on video. "They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton.

"And I've often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn't get no more freedom. They got less freedom."

The remarks have since gone viral, drawing widespread condemnation from Democrats and Republicans alike. The rancher said he doesn't feel "abandoned" by the uproar by the likes of right-wing radio firebrand and Fox News host Sean Hannity, who has ripped what he called the "ignorant, racist, repugnant, despicable comments."

Sen. Rand Paul, who originally supported Bundy's case, issued a statement Thursday decrying Bundy's racial comments.

"His remarks on race are offensive and I wholeheartedly disagree with him," said the Kentucky Republican, who's considering a 2016 presidential run.

GOP Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada earlier called Bundy's supporters "patriots." But on Thursday, the senator's office said he "completely disagrees with Mr. Bundy's appalling and racist statements."

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who had not weighed in on the land dispute, said Bundy's words were "beyond the pale."

On Thursday, in an exclusive interview with CNN's Bill Weir, Bundy was asked to elaborate on his remarks. He explained he'd been simply "wondering whether (blacks) are that much better off in the situation we're in now."

He backtracked somewhat, insisting he "didn't really mean it to compare (African-Americans' current plight) with slavery. I meant to compare it with maybe life on the farm or life in the South, where they had some chickens and the gardens, and they had something to do."

At the same time, Bundy stood by his general premise that blacks once had better lives -- stating that, right now, "they don't have nothing to do with their children, their family unit is ruined. ... That's what I was referring to. I don't think they have the life that they should have" because of the government.

How did he arrive at these generalizations?

"I feel that, because I see that," Bundy explained. He said, "I don't think I'm wrong. I think I'm right."

Weir at one point challenged the Nevada rancher about whether he was any more or less a "welfare queen" since his cattle have been feeding off the government, literally, by eating grass on public land.

Bundy's response: "I might be a welfare queen. But I'll tell you I'm producing something for America and using a resource that nobody else would use or could use. I'm putting red meat on the table."

Later Friday, the Bundy Ranch Facebook page elaborated on the rancher's "New Day" comments. The post concluded with these sentences:

"I am doing the same thing Rosa Parks did -- I am standing up against bad laws which dehumanize us and destroy our freedom. Just like the Minutemen at Lexington and Concord, we are saying no to an oppressive government which considers us to be slaves rather than free men.

"I invite all people in America to join in our peaceful revolution to regain our freedom. That is how America was started, and we need to keep that tradition alive."

The whole "better off under slavery" comment is a good start.

He just applied a blanket statement to an entire race. He is seeing the low end of a culture and applying it to the entire race that it predominantly affects. (Similar to the way liberals judge the entire South by the values of the Klan.) Recognizing cultural problems does not make him a racist, his solution, or rather his suggestion does.

I iterate once again; one can be a racist and not be hateful or mean spirited. It just shows a level of ignorance.

Foolish of him because the media now salivating over his comments, and ignoring the real news story...the out of control BLM/Fed government.

He may not be politically correct. But not so sure he's a racist?

Btw, who here believes the media reaction would be different if say: a republican administration was at the helm of the Federal government/BLM, and the rancher was a Hispanic or Black man?
