Just curious how many of you guys/gals have shot a machine gun or one with burst capability. I shot a M16 A2 with 3 round burst yesterday at the range on base. That was the first time in my 18 year career that I've gotten to do so. Of course I am an aircraft mechanic, so not much of a need to give me a weapon and let it rip. For those that are interested, the M16 I used was manufactured by FN Herstal in Columbia SC. That is the same place Herstal makes the Winchester Model 70's. I knew they manufactured plenty of military weapons, but had no idea they were making M16's for Uncle Sam now. It was a great shooting rifle, but I think as a whole I prefer my Armalite M15. But the mid length forestock M4 type rifles I find more comfortable to shoot.

When in the USAF back in the '60s, and as one of the three pilots who knew which end of the rifle was the dangerous end, I got to shoot both the M14 and the M16 on full auto. I learned that full auto is the fastest way to convert valuable ammunition to noise that man had invented yet.

The burst was fun, but honestly I don't think it would be nearly as much fun as full on rock and roll. But, they were providing me with the ammo and a place to do it, so why not. I shoot my own AR's quite a bit, so am very familiar with the weapons. I haven't tried it, but I feel fairly certain I could break one down and put it back together blindfolded. Harry, I'm giving SERIOUS consideration to going over to Anniston when I get back from the desert and picking up a M1 Garand. Unless of course you want to send me one of yours for my birthday!:D Oh, and DAB, the targets had already been taken down. I was basically just slinging lead and making noise.

FA weapons are against the law in my state, but I did have a chance to fire a couple M16s (the older kind without the burst control) that belonged to my local PD. They rent our range for their weapons practice and Quals and their instructor is a close friend.

Went to Florida a couple times and rented a FA Thompson .45 and a FA HK 9mm at a legal range. A bit pricey but you got to pay to play.

One of the gun clubs I am a member of rents full auto weapons for use at their range. I have not tried them yet.

I have shot the M16A1, M14, M60, M3 Greasegun, M2 "Ma Deuce", FN FAL, HK-G3 and Browning BAR on full automatic. There might be a couple I have forgotten in the last 30 years.
The M16A1 was easy to keep on target, using the cheesy little clip on bipod we used to have in the Army. I could put 3-5 round burst in a pie plate shape at 100 meters with no problem. Firing off hand, kneeling or standing was a little more difficult to keep on target but not much.
The M14 was a frigging beast, nobody I knew could keep it on target for more than a couple of rounds. Same thing for the G3 and FAL, you have to hold down and really step into then to control them when in FA. I mean you can get 20 rounds in a 6'x6' area but nothing very accurate.
The absolute queen of FA is the Browning Automatic Rifle,it was easy to control from any firing position. But it takes a fairly large and strong person to fire one, it is so frigging heavy. If I had to choose one weapon to go into a battle with it would be a BAR. Only problem was the 20 round only magazine. I have not fired one in FA but the British BREN gun is very similar to the BAR in firing characteristics at least in semi-mode.
The M2 .50 is a great weapon fired from the pintel of a vehicle or tripod base, accurate as hell out as far as you can see.
The M3 grease gun is great for throwing rounds around, but I bet you couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with one.
If you want a FA story on the M16, a buddy of mine told me about a time when he was on patrol in Viet Nam. He said they had set some Claymore mines up on a trail and one got set off. He said they crept up on the site and didn't see anything initially. When he got a little closer a VC set up out of the weeds and started trying to shoot with his AK47. My buddy said he emptied a magazine at the VC from about 20 feet. He said he hit him twice, once through the earlobe and one shot grazed the tip of his nose.
Luckily for my buddy the Claymore had made the AK non-functional along with basically shattering the VC's from the waist down.

M60 - Heavy, had to drag the thing around through the snow during Airbase Ground Defense training. Lot's of fun to shoot. Seemed to want to pull to the right even on the ground.

MP5 - Awesome little weapon. Glad we had them in the up armored vehicles in Baghdad. Fun to shoot, actually pretty light, you can literally make the barrel glow.

M16 - Yeah, It was okay but after firing the others, it was anticlimactic.

Never got to fire the Ma Deuce, but saw it in action many a time. Fantastic weapon.

I would be delighted to send you one of my Correct Grades for exactly what CMP would charge you for it (I've had 'em for a while so I've made a few bucks on the re-pricing were I to sell them). I would also say that you could not make a better choice of rifle or vendor. As to the South store, I understand the folks there are as helpful as can be...simply wonderful customer service. If you're looking for a shooter, I'd recommend a Service Grade ($595) and they'll help you pick out one in the best condition as to throat erosion and muzzle wear. Since I've made only mail-order purchases, I've stuck to Correct Grade (all correct heat treatment lot parts...typically, collector grade metal in a stock with lots of "character") or Special Grade (I have a new, seemingly unissued HRA and a new, also seemingly unissued Springfield Armory) which are seemingly unissued rifles with a new walnut stock and stock metal). I use one of the CGs as a shooter...it does 2 MOA with Greek M2 ball and my handloads, using Sierra Match King bullets with IMR 4064 and CCI BR2 primers, get 1-1/2 MOA.

Ive shot quite a few Full Auto's...

I went to Knob Creek 2 years ago?????? it was by total accident and it was up there with the best time of my life!...

I shot a Thompson, AK47, UZI, MP-5 and HK91... Cost me A LOT of dough but it was a TON of fun.... I hit very good with the MP5 and HK91, the AK 47 at full auto was a joke and really not enjoyable unless you want to spray and pray, the UZI jammed badly but the shocker was the controlability of the Thompson.... I really enjoyed that one.

I'm surgical with an M240. (LOVE those things)

Doing boardings of suspected pirate vessels we carried M4s with EOTech sights, night vision, and flip to the side magnifiers. We shot them to keep our qualifications on a regular basis. I also played around with an MP5 on a few occasions... would love to find a way to get my hands on one someday.

Several...
M2 on the deck
XM-218 .50 Cal in the door airborne.
M240G
M249 SAW
MK19 (If you want to include a grenade launcher.)
M16A2 on burst, but that really is nothing. Just wasting the second two rounds really.

15-20 THOUSAND dollars and that could happen

Its ridiculous how expensive Full Auto's are... i would love to see the law changed allowing us to have newer than 1986' full auto's.

The prices are crazy. When I changed roles and got out of doing the boardings the Navy was looking at using MP5s instead of the M4s. A fully loaded out MP5 (sight, NV, etc) was ungodly.

Your other list made me remember a few others. I got to shoot a SAW once. The twin .50s were always fun to shoot and I was the first to shoot the 25mm on the ship that I was on during trials... that is a mean mofo.

I have shot everything in the US Army's arsenal including the Dillon stuff.

I think the only machine gun that I have not fired is (or was) the M60E3, which I think was reserved for the Navy guys. Not sure if they still use it.

Chain guns are way more fun. M242 Bushmaster
