Yep, it's that time of year where saddle time is key and working on getting the miles to get ready for Bike MS again this year. It's a year later, and both my wife and I have learned a lot about ourselves and what we can do.

At the Bike MS event last year, we got to mile marker 73.2 and her body went into a full cramp while in motion. We got her stopped and off the bike, but she was unable to straighten her legs or arms. The heat had caused profuse sweating and dehydration to the point of cramps kicking in (and this despite the seemingly constant intake of electrolytes, water, and potassium). A volunteer helped me load her and her bike into her van (as she was going HOME) and drove her to the finish line. I finished the route for both of us. She was heartbroken but the MS and heat just got to her.

She's going to be ready this year!

We both completed the triathlon season injury-free last year, but this year she's focusing on just biking and running as she feels she gets the best workouts with them (and she likes being outside doing group activities).

Her MS has not really progressed at all since last year, which is awesome! Her physical activity really helps. She runs, bikes, does yoga, and Body Pump for some weight work. She inspires me every day. Her MS still makes her tired some days, but she works around it and still manages time to volunteer at the local animal shelters and fosters cats as needed. I don't know how she does it!

She and I are both riding for Bike MS again this year. We ride because there are others that can't and MS is a disease I can see us beating within my lifetime (I'm 44). But to do that, we need help!

The Barn was INCREDIBLE last year with the contributions and donations I received to help MS efforts. The money goes to provide items such as A/C, cooling vents, medicine, etc to families affected by MS who otherwise couldn't afford it. Money also goes to continued research and support of clinical trials for new MS therapies. With the federal government reducing their funding, your support is again crucial!!!!

I would love to be able to get some help from you guys!!! Small donations, big donations... all are welcomed and appreciated. I have been blessed to get to know quite a few of you on here (even if not face to face) and would be honored if you could help the cause.

The site below is my National MS society page for donations. It is secure, but if you want to donate, but prefer other means, please PM me and we can work something out.

I'm still figuring out how to get my azz bone in shape to put up with the seat on my old bike. Don't know how I used to do it all day long.....OUCH!

I got emails showing that donations have been made. You guys blow me away. It never ceases to amaze me the generosity of the folks here. My wife saw the donations come in and she literally sat there and cried.

Knowing that we have the support of people we've never met face to face truly makes us feel blessed.

We ride out of care and love for those impacted and we really, honestly and truly, believe that our riding DOES make a difference. Not only now by helping families better cope with MS, but also for the money that is aiding research.

My wife may or may not be able to take advantage of some of the recent advances, but all those who are being diagnosed today have SO many more methods of treatment that it is unbelievable. We're getting closer, and YOUR donations have helped make that dream just that much closer to reality.

Thank you so very much for your generosity and your support.

3M is sponsoring our Hogan YMCA team (50 members strong!) this year and providing us with jerseys. After the fact, we realized our Hogan's Heroes team had jersey colors of the German flag. "I know nussing!" about how THAT happened! Just needed my jersey number to be 13! LOL

Here is a few pics of some of our team from last year:

A photo of my wife as we pulled into the Alabama welcome stop just south of the TN border along I-65. This stop was still fairly early in the ride... Probably less than 10 miles...

At the Alabama welcome stop. We were about to leave the rest stop (many of us work for NASA and love the Saturn V rocket), when the photographer ran up to us and told us to wait so he could get photos.

After the rest stop, there was a GREAT hill that went DOWN. :) I hit 41 mph on this downhill! She hit 39 I think. Fortunately, the road is very smooth and clear.

However, after that hill was an equal hill that went UP. I think I was at 4.1 mph on that one. LOL But at the top was this rest stop. Many organizations from hospitals, to church groups, to the Boy Scouts, to community organizations, set up rest stops every 12-15 miles to provide shade, drinks, snacks, and energy drinks/bars for the riders. Again, made possible through the generosity of the community.

Rather tranquil photo as my wife and I rode past a church along the TN/AL border on the 75 mile route... This was about mile 30 or so...

A pic of my wife (with me right behind her) less than 5 minutes into the ride. The local police shut down the road at the start of the race to allow the huge number of riders go safely out into the rural areas.

I'm sure it would have given certain members on here a FIT if they had to drive around this area on that day. But there were signs EVERYWHERE advising folks of it. Traffic was very friendly to us. We had vans/pickups driving past all the time providing drinks or bicycle repair if needed and many would stop and wave to us and cheer us on.

Knowing you can make a difference in somebody's life just by giving of yourself is truly a special kind of reward that cannot be described.
