Most of you know about my love affair with Jaguars. I'm on my fifth one. Let me comment a little on Jaguars in general:

The driver in the video was surprised by the exhauast note. What people don't know is that all the 2-door Jags (XK, XKR, F) sound like that under hard acceleration. I've passed a lot of hot-shot wannabe drag racers who had this WTF look on their face when they heard the exhaust. It sounds like a Porsche being thrown to the lions.

Second, please not the video driver's comment about the ride/suspension. Any 550 HP car has a very stiff suspension, but you don't notice it in a Jag. The ride difference between a 420 HP XK and a 550 HP XKR is hardly noticeable. And the brake rotors on Jags are huge; that's how their stopping distance equals Porsche.

Jags have an extremely rigid aluminum unibody. Hydroformed aluminum beam sweep up the A-pillars, along the roof edges, and back to the beltline replace the structural contribution of normal B-pillars.

The new F-type R coupe embodies the brazen attitude Jaguar abandoned in the ’60s. With its athleticism, including acceleration from zero to 60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds, the R coupe moves closer to the benchmark Porsche 911 Turbo than any Jaguar before it. Except, that is, for its starting price, which at $99,895 is roughly two-thirds the Porsche’s.

Nice. Have they finally exorcized all the electrical (Lucas) gremlins, too?

Nice. Have they finally exorcized all the electrical (Lucas) gremlins, too?

They have. When Ford bought Jaguar in 1989 (sold it in 2008), it poured lots of money to bring the Jaguar factory up to date, and quality soared. For several years Jaguar tied with Lexus in quality. They are still near the top in quality.

It's a great little car. It grips the road like it's on rails. Here's what the Porsche 911 Cabriolet Turbo should be worried about:

Engine:

Porsche: A 3.8 liter turbo six cylinder that makes 560 hp.

Jaguar: A 5.0 liter supercharged V-8 that makes 550 hp.

0-60:

Porsche: "A little over 3 seconds," per Porsche.

Jaguar: 3.3 seconds.

Price:

Porsche: Starts at $194,895.

Jaguar: Starts at $99,800.

Isn't that color a lot like the old Corvette Atomic Orange?

Looks a tad darker, but I think I could also be happy with BRG.

Reminds me of when I bought my first Jaguar:

Me: I'm having trouble deciding on a color. The Claret is pretty, but so is the Topaz.

Salesman: They're all pretty....

I never have to worry about which color to order. Mixed blessing
