Both the bare metal ones home airport is near Pigeon Forge, TN. I had rented a cabin and was out on the deck when I heard both take off. They flew around for awhile. No mistaking those big radials. I visited the museum and still hope they fly each time I go there. I got some pretty cool Pratt/Whitney, etc...stickers :D I think I had/read a book about Zemke's Wolfpack? A P-47 sqdn. during the war.

:yesnod: Good book. I painted up a P-47 model OD with the big white stripe like that one time.

P-47s were known as jugs because they had such fat round bodies, like an old milk jug. Or at least that's the clean version :D

The Thunderbolt was a nice plane, but I dont think it was superior to the Hellcat or the later Bearcat.

I've been playing this game ever since I got a PS4. It's a free to play PC game they ported over to PS4. It's a fun dogfighting simulator game where you can see your favorite planes from WWII and Korean war and then shoot them down!

Love those birds. Built 'em as models back in the day when I was a shorty.

The Hellcat and BearCat were naval and Marine fighters mostly used in the Pacific theater. The P-47 was European theater. No comparison. :slap:

No, I tossed them all out a few years ago.
There is a great WW2 era movie...it may have been made in 1946-1947. It's about a P-47 sqdn. but, filmed in color! So cool, to see them all in color. Maybe...'Thunderbolt' or something. They used Mustangs for the German fighters LOL

There was a documentary filmed in color, on the Italian front in 1944. I've seen it more than once :funny:

Red F6F and F8F were a lot more maneuverable and lighter weight for taking on the Japanese. The P-47 was a huge, heavy duty fighter better suited for taking on the Germans.
1 on 1? The navy planes would fly rings around the jug, but the jug would blow them away as soon as one got in front of him.

I had to keep it clean for the virgins in the audience. They know who they are :funnier:

I loved building both plastic and balsa model planes as a kid. P-47 Jugs were one of my favorites.
I believe the propeller was about 13 feet diameter.( the real ones).
When they got ratty, they'd go to the back yard for the "Last Dogfight" loaded
up with gunpowder, firecrackers and a piece of sponge soaked with gas.
Great fun!:)
Strangely, my parents were never home to enjoy it...

I never destroyed mine, they turned into spares. Except that time I got rid of a model of the Titanic by burning holes where the iceburg hit it
