Feel free to add your pics too :cert:
I have three gardens. They are all in terrible shape from the previous owner. Thinking about just mowing them down completely :leaving:

We'll be moving the garden to the side of the house this year since the light is better.

I had some of the BEST jalapeno peppers last year! They come in late it seems...but, man they were good. I think I'm just sticking to pepper and spices this year. I'll visit the Amish Mkt. for their veggies. I love watching them work the horses in the fields anyway. They can plow a straight line better than any I've ever attempted.

You're doing it the old-fashion way and the best way. When you find a variety of vegetable that grows well and produces well in your area, then stick with it. Your 16 plants bought at a garden center would cost you $60-$100. You're doing it for pennies, plus those garden store plants look good, but they're unknowns.
I have tomato seeds in potting soil, and they're all sprouting. I also planted some Blue Fescue seeds and Shasta Daises for the flower beds. I still need to plant okra seeds, kale, turnips, and other greens. I'll probably just sow them in the ground when it gets warmer. I also have an American Persimmon and a Plumcot growing from cuttings.
:seasix:
I have out of control Strawberry plants hibernating right now.

We're in full outdoor planting mode here. We bought a small 6'x6' plastic greenhouse and started seeds weeks ago. I've been hauling big bags of potting soil to the back yard and replenishing the soil in the raised boxes. We are already eating potatoes I planted months ago.
As you've probably heard, we've been having a very warm and dry couple of winters here in California, so I'm taking a risk and planting about six or eight weeks early. We could still have a frost, but damn, the wife and I just had dinner on the deck tonight and it was close to 80* today.
We planted some things this weekend - tomatoes, cilantro and parsley (started from seeds in the greenhouse) Yellow squash, cucumbers, zucchini. We also have some garlic already coming up, and my baked potato tonight had chives from our chive plant that looks like it's June or July. Still to come are several varieties of peppers, green beans and not sure what else yet.

Looks like some good soil. Have you considered maybe some Korean Boxwood close to the house to cut down the staining on the concrete?

Started mine about 10 days ago. Very similar to yours. Had about 8 plants 1" tall . It was so nice today, I had them on the window sill with the window open. Welllll, I guess the wind picked up, blew them off and dumped them upside down on my shoes.:funnier::funnier: I picked them up and fixed them up as good as I could. Vacuumed out my shoes and put the plants back on the sill. I hope they survive. I hate buying plants. Thats cheating. If they survive I will have tomatoes, green beans and cucumbers. Only need one or two of each. A couple marigold plants should attract the bees.

The soil is very good here, it used to be orchards where my house is and the farm fields across the road do very well.

It doesn't take a large garden or even a garden at all to grow good food. I started out the same as you; everything was on the patio. Whatever way a person gardens, it's good for the soul.

Finally had time to take some pics of a part of our plants. We don't really have a dedicated garden(no ideal spot to put one). I'm trying to bring in various plants and spread them out wherever I can(yes, I need to cut and weed some of them free :D).
We'll be here for a year in June and the previous owners did not care much for gardening (although they left a couple of fruit trees).
I still have plants that haven't made it to their final destination yet, but I had to put them somewhere, wasn't going to leave them behind.
Closest thing to a garden we have right now is a raised bed for greens, which we will add to.
Also need to find a space to grow green asparagus. Was thinking of a raised bed, maybe an old wine barrel that could be moved around...
So many plants and seeds/seedlings that I am not even showing here. :willy:

Yes, that's definitely a river birch. I miss the one that used to live just next to our front entryway. It was really nifty looking with the paper-like bark and it also had three main trunks. But it just up and died, apparently some sort of worm bored into it and killed it deader than a door nail. My then-neighbors across the street thought it was really a cool tree and planted one in their front yard. It's still alive and doing fine. I have a variety of magnolia in place of where our river birch used to be.

Beautiful, healthy plants, '77Babe! You mentioned growing asparagus in a raised bed. That's the way I have mine, in two 4' x 8' raised beds, each 12" high. I recommend 2 beds because asparagus tends to grow at erratic intervals, and it's hard to get enough mature spears for a meal from one bed.
If you don't know how to grow asparagus, here's how: Don't grow from seeds, get dormant roots (called "crowns"), preferably all male hybrid plants. They devote all their efforts to production instead of making seeds.
Dig two 12"-deep trenches lengthwise in the 4' x' 8' planter. Place the crowns spread out over mounds of soil (like you plant roses) 18" apart and cover with 3" of soil. When they're grown thru that 3" of soil, add another 3", and keep going until your dirt is level at the height of the planter.
Pick no spears the first year, maybe just a few the second year, and all ou want in subsequent years. Use a soaker hose to keep the soil moist, and fertilize well beginning the second year. They're big eaters. Asparagus won't tolerate weeds, grass, or competition from other vegetables. Keep your beds clean by hand-weeding only.

One caution about river birches: They are very messy trees all year long. Almost everyone who had one cut it down. Never plant one close to your hose because they will clog your gutters frequently.

Garden is coming around nicely :hurray:
Peas ( in the back ) are almost done. Mint tea around the gutter drain and chives "clump" towards the front.
