It took months of strategic and safety planning to work out how to get Captain Oprey onto the bulbous bow, which helps to stabilise the ship and streamline movement, and dips in and out of the water depending on currents and swell. But it was an idea too good to pass up.

‘When I suggested we photograph the captain standing on the bulbous bow, they all looked at me like I was a tiny bit mad, but the fact it hadn’t been done was why we had to do it,’ photographer James Morgan told MailOnline. Mr Morgan was in Sydney last week when he got a call that the conditions in Bali were perfect for the shoot and so he hurried to the Indonesian island to capture the images. However, by the time he arrived the conditions had worsened and he spent a ‘nervous five or six hours on the bridge’, before the weather calmed and they were able to get the captain safely onto the bulbous bow. Mr Morgan said ‘safety was paramount’ and they used two safety boats to transport Captain Oprey to the bow. He took the shot from a small boat floating in front of the Queen.

A few years ago it was docked in Newport Harbor for the 4th of July. My brother loaded half our family on his 26' Sea Ray and I followed him with the other half of the family in my 18' Sea Ray. While we were waiting for the show to start, the Coast Guard allowed everyone to do laps around the Queen Mary II to get up close and personal. We went around once or twice, waving at all the people. It was pretty amazing to see it that close. During the fireworks, whenever there was a particularly good explosion, everyone hits their horns, including the QMII.
After the fireworks were over, we knew the ramp would be a zoo so we decide to just hang out in the harbor with all the other boats. Everyone is blasting their horns, including the QMII. As we cross the bow of the QMII, the Coast Guard comes up alongside us with the lights going and come over the PA. "The Vessel IS UNDERWAY!" I look up, and all I see is black steel bearing down on us. You couldn't really tell at first that it was moving. We both slam the throttle and turn as the ocean liner barely misses us. Scared the shit out of me, it looked exactly like the first pic. Fast forward six years, I found an old roll of 35mm film last month and developed it. It was taken that night, lots of pics of us cruising around the boat.
