View Full Version : Alignment, bad tires, balance issue?? Where would you start?

Slight vibration in my steering wheel over 65 or so.
Here's the odd part. When you brake hard from higher speeds. The car is unsettled. It shifts from side to side a little bit. Enough to be noticeable and have me get it looked at.
Of course i go to get it aligned today as i had a year worth of free alignments post suspension install and that year was up 2 weeks ago on the 1st. :banghead:
I have an appointment at what most consider the best suspension/tire setup shop in the A Friday with hopes of getting this sorted out. Gran Turismo East - 770.455.0347 (http://www.granturismoeast.com/)

From your description, which is a bit minimum, :D I would suspect a braking issue.
On the other hand, I have had issues with ice build up on the inside of the rim that would only vibrate at certain speeds. Of course it didn't make the car pull to one side or the other. That is almost always a brake issue.
Could be brake dust clogged up in the calipers. I had that with our old '05 Cobalt. Car rode just fine until I went to hit the brakes and it shook the steering wheel very hard and the car pulled to one side or the other.

Possible driveshaft out of balance. That can do some interesting things!

Balance is the easiest thing to check first.

I still have the vibration at speed. Maybe two separate issues? I just took it for a ride and its not as stable as it should be at higher speeds. I would say when i brake it exaggerates what it does as high speed so i would think its a balance/tire issue. They are going to balance them on the car friday.

Sounds like tire out of balance to me.

Yup, me too. Cold weather may have caused a weight to fall off.

Two issues. A front tire out of balance/round, and brake rotors. Did they turn the rotors the last time you had new brakes installed? If so, they're still not even; if not, they need to be turned. A lot of shops now won't turn rotors, and you have to put on new ones. Not cheap.

I'm impatient.
Balancing them now. The shop that mounted them is road forcing them for free.

I don't think just a balance is gonna fix it. JMO
I've had out of balance wheels but they didn't make my car pull to either side.

I had an issue similar to this on my truck some years ago and it turned out to be a separated tire, took a front end tech to see it,I never noticed it.
Always check the cheapest and easiest thing first.

YUP!!! when they use stick on weights, I let it leave the tire shop then take fresh black RTV from the auto stores, and seal them all in place around the edges....let set overnight, the RTV don't weigh anything so not to worry about that, what is does is seal the double sided sticky tape on the weight and so also is additional glue....
I don't think I have ever had a hammer on metal weight come off....:issues:

Did you try pulling the wheel up and down, and side to side when you had it up in the air, to check for play?
Could be tie rod end or ball joint.

stuck brake caliper.
That would make it pull one direction, not both.

Something that places charge extra for, and is actually no additional work to do.

It was.
You could see where the sticker resedue was from the old weight that I lost. It was on the front passenger side which is why I felt it as much as I did in the steering under hard braking. Seems good to go. I'll get it on the interstate tomorrow and get it up to speed.

We had that problem on several vehicles here during those cold days we had.

If you start road racing, you'll get used to it. I don't even know why I get my race tires balanced. They move quite a bit after each session. My tire guy mounts dry and uses hair spray- they still move.

Might want to consider the hammer on weights instead.

Might want to consider the hammer on weights instead. They won't keep the tire from moving on the wheel.

:iagree:
since you feel it through the steering wheel and not the pedal I would check this too. Upper and lower control arm bushings could be contributing to the issue too. If you do feel pulsing through the pedal I would suspect a warped roter.

For some reason I thought he was talking about weights falling off. :willy:

I'm gonna check the rotor thickness this weekend and see if should do rotors and pads both. At 29k on a 400whp car who knows, it might need rotors soon. They aren't warped or anything, but they are easy enough to swap out so i might just do it and be done with it all. Problem is if i do rotors i'll end up spending money on a slotted/vented setup all around just because that's how i roll. I'm almost hoping the rotors are perfectly fine so i don't spend the money.. :D

Plus make sure you get all the use out of a set of tires.

That is exactly why I've been putting off checking my rotors.
