View Full Version : What's for lunch?
Black History month menu gone wrong:
Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu (http://news.msn.com/us/calif-school-apologizes-for-black-history-lunch-menu)
When a California school planned to serve fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon to celebrate Black History Month, some students and parents were offended.
CONCORD, Calif. — Officials at a Northern California private school are apologizing after a lunch menu option to celebrate Black History Month angered some parents and students.
Students at Carondelet High School for Girls in Concord wanted to come up with ways to observe the occasion during a lunchtime celebration Friday. But when the school announced a menu of fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon, other students and parents became offended.
KNTV-TV reports that school officials held an assembly Wednesday to discuss the issue and also sent a letter apologizing to parents. Principal Nancy Libby wrote that the items were taken off of the menu and that the school doesn't perpetrate racial stereotypes.
Libby also wrote the school will hold a diversity assembly.
Calls to the school on Thursday were not immediately returned.
sounds delicious to me.

Why can't people just take a joke? I would've just written off that incident as harmless humor. And enjoyed the lunch. Fried chicken, corn bread, and watermelon are good eating....with iced tea, of course.

German folks like sauerkraut and brats, Canadians like poutine, Swedes like reindeer and boiled fish, and Southerners Black and White like fried chicken and corn bread and watermelon. How is all this racist?

Yoohoo works if there's no sweet tea...
I'd love some chicken and cornbread right about now. Watermelon when it's in season too :seasix:

On a cold winter's night, you can't beat skillet-fried rabbit with a side of taters and gravy or red beans and rice.

Theresa and I are going to Outback Steakhouse tonight. Date night.
Any suggestions? I won't feck with the monster-calorie appetizers like the Bloomin Onion (over 1500 calories) and Cheese Fries (over 2200 calories).
Even their popular meals like the Outback Special with loaded baked potato and house salad (over 1400 calories and 76 grams of fat) are the norm.

When I've gone there, I've gotten the NY Strip (no salt/seasoning) with mixed veggies (carrots/snow peas/squash - hold the broccoli) and green beans as the two sides...steamed only, no butter or seasoning. I eat half and take the other half home. May not sound exciting to you guys but it's what works for me. :seasix:

They definitely don't need to add any more. Once you get used to eating salt-shaker free as we have, you'd be amazed how much additional sodium is in food.

I've been using lemon-pepper for years....great stuff on almost anything.
some of those salt substitutes have ingredients that don't play well with some common heart meds, so Mrs. Dash it is. lots of varieties.

Embracing said food heritage is deadly for many AA's. 1 out of 5 have high blood pressure, and many more are undiagnosed.
The condition itself usually has no signs or symptoms. You can have it for years without knowing it. During this time, though, HBP can damage your heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of your body.
I love Southern/soul food as much as the next man, but it's not worth digging your grave with a fork, knife and a spoon over. Everything in moderation.
