The DVR is going away next week. I'd like to save the porn I downloaded to my computer. I mean, sports events. Yeah, sports.:leaving:

if you need a VCR, they are around $3 at Goodwill.
have you tried reading the Manual? some helpful stuff in there.
If your DVR has a USB port, you might be able to hook it up to a PC via that, or even through a USB port on your TV.

Many DVRs are proprietary in how they store media. For instance, I have a 1TB drive hooked up to mine. I'm pretty sure I can't take those movies and transfer them to my laptop because of the decoding that needs to take place.

If it's your DirecTV box I'm 90% certain the only way is to play it into another recording device. As I'm to understand it the video stored in the machine or even an external drive hooked up to that machine can only be played on that machine. You're not supposed to even be able to take stuff receorded onto an external device on that machine to another DVR.
