In my opinion, this is what happened in Birmingham also. We don't have the government employees so much in birmingam, it was just everybody seeing what was going on and left for home at the same time. It happened very fast.

Excellent story. People up "Nawth" do assume that we're bumpkins for not being able to drive in snow, but they'd have the same inability if it were ice on the ground. When it snows there, the temps are generally so low that snow doesn't melt upon hitting the ground. I don't care what they say, no one can drive on ice.

That's what happened here. Everything closed at the same time but it had already started snowing and freezing. School officials announced that schools were closing so everyone left work or home to get their kids. I know I would not have wanted my kids on a school bus in those conditions. My principal, two teachers, eleven students and I were already planning our spend the party at school. Luckily their parents finally arrived. We knew all their parents were stuck in the traffic jam.

December 2008 New England and Upstate New York ice storm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We know Ice storms pretty well. I've been through several; that crippled the areas I was in for day.

The thing is to not drive in them. The way you do that is STAY HOME. And if you can't stay home stay put.

I wasn't criticizing you (part-time) Yankees; I realize that you, too, know that you can't drive on ice, even with snow tires or 4WD. There was, however, criticism yesterday in the Atlanta weather thread about how inept we are about driving in snow. It was snow that melted here when it hit the ground and promply freezed.

I'll leave it to others to blame public officials for the traffic snarls because I frankly do not know.

The two teachers that stayed are southern gentlemen. After all the students had been picked up, three hours after the early dismissal time, we discussed how we were going to get home. I left first, a few minutes later the principal left, then Mr. G and then Mr. A. Our plan was if I couldn't make it I would come back to school or call or if we slid off the road or got stuck someone could find us. I drove on ice for the first time ever. It was very interesting. My exploder has a little orange squiggly symbol for traction. First time I ever saw it come on. Poor Mr. A lives the furtherest away. It took him hours to get close to his house and then he ended up abandoning his car and walking home with his wife and son. They were 10 cars ahead of him and she had decided to just walk the rest of the way home too. They had been in contact with each other but didn't know they were so close.

That's so touching, but at least a somewhat happy ending because no one got hurt and they were able to make it home.

How are the temps where you are, Lisa? It was supposed to be 50 here today, but it barely hit 40, plus wind. When I left for work this morning, it was 24. There's still snow/ice on the sides of the roads, but none on the travelled part. Tomorrow is supposed to be upper 50's, Saturday upper 60's. We'll see.

It got up to 48 after our 9 degree start. The main roads are good. I just got an email that our county school system will be closed again tomorrow. The school officials say rural roads are still dangerous for school buses.
Snow day # 3.5!
