View Full Version : Job hunting SUCKS! (Houston)

Been down in Texas just over 2 weeks now, and had some interviews but no job offers yet. Best one was a PR firm who wanted me to come in for an interview. Had a list of 8-10 things they really wanted, I had a few and could do the rest with a bit of training. Figured they've seen my resume, know what I've done so they must be thinking along the same lines since they said 'we really like what we read about you.' Sweet. So I go interview and they basically said 'We don't really have time to train, we need someone who can hit the ground running.' Then WTF did you have me come interview?!?!? UGH.
Still have some things in the pipeline, but it's really starting to get frustrating. I'm getting more interviews now that I'm actually in town, but have been searching the past few months with no success and now no income...ugh. :shots:
hang in there and good luck in your search.
years ago, when i was looking, i kept seeing the same ad over the course of months, yep, they wanted someone fully trained....if you had hired someone during week 1 of the search, they'd be up and running now.....and you wouldn't have to keep looking. :slap: they admitted i was right, but kept at it anyway. idiots.

Sorry Matt! Houston is still one of the best places in the world to be looking for a job right now. :yesnod: You'll find something!

The search/interview process can be really discouraging. Especially when you go in thinking you're a serious contender only to find out you're on a different page.
Keep at it brutha, Houston is a hopping market compared to much of what's out there.

I feel for ya. I have been in the hunt for about 6 months now. Things have been picking up, and I actually made it to the final interviews twice, but nothing yet. Hopefully Houston has better opportunities for you. The Dayton, OH area is not the mecca of tech jobs these days. Maybe a new career needs to be in order for me.
Good luck on your search.

My last job was in 1979 working at "The Egyptian Body Shop" in Dayton Ohio....
For some reason I never wanted a job that required being up early in the mornings again. :island14:
Consider the net for an income... even ebay you can make a decent living.
Your own hours, work from home, and does not matter where you live on the planet.
Ask me how I know... :D

I've mainly been in video production, but have also done communications stuff too. Hell, I'd shovel shit at this point :)

Lift with your legs, not your back ( from someone who grew up on a farm :yesnod: )
Good luck in your search, hopefully something will come your way soon.

Back in the vacuum tube daze, when knights were bold and liquor was quicker.....I had an electronic hobby.....building all sorts of stuff from Ham Radio receivers and transmitters, and then stereo amps/preamps, and even tape transport electronics, so after school/army for one month..... I went into the summer job occupation, fixing TV sets....flying diddle stick happy tube jocky....that occupation was dead long about '80 so went into small time ET work for a security systems company.....lasted about 5 years, so after 20 years in electronics, I kissed it off....and went into construction/home remodeling.....and did near 3X my previous income in the trade....FIRST YEAR!!!!
let them import HOUSES....damnit.....
I dunno what you know about construction/home remodeling, but the trade treated my rather well over the last 25 years or so....:seasix::dance:
That was MY solution, no comment about it being yours....best of luck man....I made the switch when my kids were brand new also.....

If you decide you might want to try sales for strictly commission, might be able to put something together.

There's lots of jobs here in town from entry level to big $$$.
If you are looking to possibly change careers, it's a pretty good time and town to do it (for the most part).
It's looking like that might be my best option at this point. Still trying to get in to what I've done, but applying to new things as well!

What area would you be looking to get into for a change?
I'm honestly open to almost anything. Have applied to sell cars and even insurance companies. Something steady and reliable.

Then don't sell cars. Serious.

Thanks for the advice. Was trying to find something that I was interested in. Heard it's a rough field...

Real Estate?
Near my house they are building like madmen. Every time I drive I see a new crop of houses popping up.

What about pharmaceutical sales (legal dope dealer)? With Houston's medical community being what it is, I'd think that'd be a lucrative career field.

You'll need a wig, pumps, and a boob job (well, maybe not:rofl:).
Drug bimbos do ok, but medical equipment sales brings in the $$$ and you don't have to be pretty.:seasix:

Especially in the area of cardiac care. The Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston is ranked among the 10 best in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery. :seasix:

First interview went well, they invited me back for a second interview. Not sure if it's just selling internet service dressed up as 'marketing' or what. Going to go back and see what the deal is. Undecided about this one, it could go either way.
Second interview went really well. It was a second interview and a practical test where they had me edit some footage for them as if it were a regular work day. They liked what I did and how much I got accomplished. So I felt good leaving there, just have to wait and see. Walk out to my car to find it had been hit in the parking lot. :issues::issues: Amazingly enough the guy left his name, number, and insurance info!!!! :seasix::seasix: Wonders never cease!! And to top it all off, we have an offer on the house. Think it might be sold!!!
