[UPDATED] Could use some prayers...

Update 1/26/2014: Things were looking up for awhile, but the pneumonia was too much. My grandfather passed away this morning. I'll be heading to Scottsboro this week for the funeral.

My grandfather isn't doing so well. He's my only living grandparent left.

We drove down from Michigan every summer and spent many, many months with him learning to fish and hunt, riding quads, helping care for the horses, gathering eggs, taking care of whatever animals people dumped at the side of the road on his farm...and just generally learning an appreciation for nature. He even made us hook out own bait. And taught us that catfish love chicken guts.

We learned much of our love for animals from him and once bottle fed baby squirrels that were in the nest of a dead tree he was removing from his property. Didn't discover them until the tree was cut down. He looked at them and looked at us, wide-eyed and wondering what he'd do. He scooped them into an old towel and set them in a shoe box, then set up the shoebox onto a heating pad. Fed them every few hours, day and night. All under the watchful and impressionable eyes of his granddaughters. They lived, grew big and we set them free.

He owned his own business building houses and always took us to the job sights. This was in Alabama at time when girls were supposed to be playing with dolls and tea sets, not walking around wearing tool belts 15 sizes too big...complete with our very own tools. He caught some flack, but didn't care what people said; his girls could do/be anything they wanted. And he didn't care that we were Yankees or that we talked funny. ;)

He is a good man, affectionately known by his nickname, Cap.

My mom and aunts have made their way there (Alabama). We're waiting for more news and I'm making all the calls tonight. Checking airfare, etc. They stepped out of his room to speak with the doctor and as they were talking they called a code blue to his room. BP crashed.

Back up now, but not remaining stable. Bouncing all over. They gave him some morphine because he seemed to be in pain. He's not concious, but is breathing on his own. They decided not to intubate him, as my grandfather made it clear he did not want that. We'll see what his status is by morning.

I'm flying into Chattanooga in a few days. Oddly, it was cheaper than Huntsville from LAX...by about $200. I was surprised. :shrug:
