Anybody use an air rifle or pistol for target practice? I haven't been to a range in over a year. Ammo is prohibitive and I'd like to practice at home.

Recommendations?

I'm also considering talking to the city police chief about getting a his blessing for putting a target range on my property for the real thing. I've got the perfect place for it.

I have a 1000 fps Gamo air rifle, out in the shed, I put a couple of 4x4 pieces of wood together and fire away.

Sorry for the dark cloud, but good luck with that, better check with the EPA and a handful of other regulatory agencies.

I have a Russian made Baikal IZH 46M air pistol that I use in my back yard. It is a really nice target gun I initially bought for competition.
I also have a Ruger Air magnum rifle but it is fargin LOUD. Most spring guns are. That combined with the pellet breaking the sound barrier make it a bit obnoxious if you have neighbors. The air pistol is super quiet.

Pyramydair has tons of selections.

Loud isn't really ideal. I don't want to draw attention unless/until I can get a real range

Most air pistols are fairly quiet, to get quiet in a rifle, you need to spend some money and do some mods.

At the most basic, the USEPA says this:

Lead on outdoor firing ranges is not currently considered by USEPA as an environmental contaminant unless it becomes waste lead by being discarded or abandoned. Lead shot deposited on soils and in berms at firing ranges is not considered a "waste" because it has been used for its intended purpose

They also don't have any official regulations but have issues a "Best Management Practices" document.

In small-town Iowa, I have a pretty good shot.

I've got 3 rifles, one under lever, one side lever and one break barrel. All are upper end pieces, but compared to powder burners, not so much.

I made a pellet collector (target) and have a place to shoot outside my shop that I can adjust out to about 30 yards. Longer shots require that I walk a little further.

For me, it's hard to beat to practice trigger control, at @ $9 for a 500 round tin of .22 pellets. Look on some of the air gun forums for more information than you want.

I had set up a .22 trap in our basement for the kids to shoot air rifles in when they were younger.

Amazon.com has them for $69.00 Amazon.com: Champion .22 Bullet Trap (Rimfire Only): Sports & Outdoors@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51rqdlwoguL.@@AMEPARAM@@51rqdlwoguL

That's good, where I'm at, I need to be at least 300' away from a dwelling.

That might be difficult for me. I have some acreage but its long and narrow

That's how my yard is, long rectangle. MA requires no firearms within 500' of a dwelling and my lot is too small. However, it is really easy to set up a nice air gun range.

Those Gamo's are bad ass. I want one of the Gamo Whisper's!:seasix: I want to do this though..My long time friend Dan Newberry and another guy are the instructors/owners. Out to a 1000 yards we go! Maybe some of you guys can get to VA and do it sometime.

Here is the separate parcel behind my property that is zoned ag-land.

So, I got this Saturday, haven't had a chance to try it out.
Scale is identical to my other AR platforms.

Aside from the mag color, not easy to differentiate from the real deal at a quick glance.

Umm, is bb a caliber?
I guess .177 since it's dual ammo.

Most air rifles are .177, some are .22. The Ruger Air Magnum I have is in .177 but you can get it in .22 caliber.

Finally got to take out some cans with it. The sights were WAY off, like 8" high. I had to really move the front sight post. Fortunately it is adjustable and comes with a sight tool in the magazine (which also holds the pellet magazine).

I realize fast dude is a thread necrophiliiac but I missed it the first time so here's my 2 cents.

I have a Beeman P3 and it's pretty decent.
