View Full Version : Snake...here's my heartwarming GSD story from this morning...

I was getting out of my car this morn, when. One of my neighbors approached me and asked me if I knew anyone with a kitten or anyone missing a kitten. She was walking her GSD, who was whimpering a little and kept looking back at the end of the street.

She said there was a kitten hiding in the lantana bushes at the end if the street, so we walked down there. Sure enough, he was hiding there and I could see his paw was swollen.

He wasn't making any noise, so I asked her how she found him. She said it was her female GSD that 'found' him/her. They were walking by the bushes, when she showed an unsusally high interest in something over there. Then she started crying and just sat down. Didn't want to go any further.

We fished the kitten out of the bushes and he/she was pretty weak. The GSD was whimpering and was just very interested. I had the kitten in my hands and the GSD gave her a little sniff and then a lick on the head.

Brought the kitten to my porch and got some water and food. She ate a whole can of cat food; poor thing was starving. The whole time, the GSD just sat there over her, almost protecting her. Then she laid down next to the kitten and watched her until she finished eating. When the kitten was done and was wobbling around (because of her hurt foot) the GSD was just nuzzling her with her nose...and them the kitten started bumping her head in the dog and rubbing in her legs. It was like...instant best friends.

My neighbor said she'd take the kitten home, try and find her owner. However, she was pretty filthy and we agreed she probably did not have a home.

Her GSD was just in love with this little baby. She was so gentle, like she knew that she was injured. I said to the lady, "You must have cats at home, huh?" Nope. No cats. It's just that this female GSD loves other animals. :funny: I've never seen anything quite like it from a dog that hasn't been brought up around cats. :willy:

Anyhow, I think the lady was just as in love with the kitten as her dog was. She's running him/her to the vet as soon as she can get an appointment. I think that little baby will have a good home (and a good, watchful companion) if she doesn't find the owner.

I don't get any pics. I wish I would've. A vid would've been better. It was the damnedest thing. I didn't think about it until after she was gone. :nonod:

She's going to let me know how it goes next week. If I can, I'll get some pics. It was just adorable.

That sounds exactly like our male GSD Dover. He absolutely loves small animals. He whimpers and wines exactly like you described that female doing anytime he see's a small dog (I've never seen him around a cat, but I suspect it would be the same reaction) around our neighborhood.

Great story. :seasix:

my idiot dog: would not go out the front door for a walk moments ago, but would go out the back door. :slap: it's the same outside goofball.

Can you replace the 'kitten' with 'Sea Six' in this story?

That story turned out exactly as I hoped it would. Good for you and you neighbor! I have lived that story in different forms many, many times. Annie was the most recent one: 4 ounces of hungry, screaming kitten way too young to not have her mother. I had to substitute and do the best I could. Today she a happy, healthy monster of a cat (both in size and attitude).

BTW, those stray kitties make the best pets: They're strong, bond well with their "owner", smart, and very loving. :cert:

We have 5 cats. Two are purebreds purchased from a breeder. The other three are all shelter cats. It is obvious on a daily basis that the shelter cats are soooo greatfull to have a nice warm home and food. While we love them all, the "mutts" seem to love us more because they have seen what life can be like for a street cat.

I am convinced that rescue cats know and appreciate how lucky they are. You may have seen some of my posts about rescue and former feral cats. Presently my new "project" is a cat that likes to hang around outside my office downtown. Several weeks ago I coaxed her inside my office, and she spent a week inside, eating to her heart's content and sleeping safefully.

She's over a year old, so she got the urge to go outside, and I accomodated her. I don't blame her for missing the outside. But she still comes back to be fed and maybe spend the night inside all safe and warm. She really shows her appreciation for that, too, with lots of loving and touching. It's a great symbiotic relationship with understanding and trust. I doubt that purebreds would have the same reaction.

All of my cats at home are rescues or former ferals. Every one of them is totally devoted to me and can't get enough of loving. I'm the only parent that they ever knew, and they show their loyalty and appreciation.

Every animal I've ever owned has either been a stray or has come from the pound. My only problem with getting animals from the pound is that it's upsetting to see so many that I can't take home. :(

Awesome story! I can picture it. Great example of a GSD sensing something wrong and demonstrating compassion to make it well.

Our very first Australian shepherd found a kitten while my wife was walking him. The kitten just barely had it's eyes open and was week, July heat in VA Beach. My wife brought the kitten home and we named her Molly. Our Aussie would sit and breathe on her for hours keeping her warm inside the house. He would stand guard over her so she could eat without the other cats or dogs bothering her. Whenever we wanted to know where Molly was we'd ask Chewbacca where was Molly and he'd go right to the spot she was hiding and sleeping. Her favorite spot was inside the couch so we had to be careful when we went to sit down. The best bonding of a cat and dog I'd ever seen, they were inseparable.

Thanks!

We own an African Hedgehog. Hanna is obsessed with it. But she is gentle. Could be the razor sharp quills. :kick:

That story would have ended very differently if my Malamutes were involved. Small animals = snack time :(
