View Full Version : PC experts - How do I change a folder's attribute from read-only (Windows 7)
Anyone know?
I'm right clicking the folder, unchecking the read only attribute, and then clicking "apply." As soon as I exit the properties screen though, it reverts to read only.

You can only set files to not be read only.
Trying to get Sim City 2000 Special Edition to work on my Windows 7 laptop.
SC2K folder is in the program files (x86) folder on the c drive.
I have no idea what you mean by permissions.
Game crashes if I try to save or load.

Here you go:

Didn't work. Read only is still checked in the file's properties.
Ugh. Thanks for the help.

Select all of the files inside the folder at once, right-click any one of them, go to Properties, then check and then uncheck "read only".
Vista permissions is a bit of a bitch ...
Try opening up Control Panel.
Type in user account into the search box.
You'll see the link for "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.
Click it.
Uncheck the box and reboot.
No dice. SC2K folder and sub-folders still say read only once you go back into properties.
I haven't found anyone on the web who has made the game work on Windows 7. Just figured I'd try here. Thanks anyway.

Not the folders, the files. Folders can't be set to "read only" or "not read only". The setting applies only to the files. What are the files set to?

Ask it politely. :bilmem:

Only the folders and subfolders are read only. I guess that's not the issue then?
I just don't understand why the game itself actually runs fine, but crashes if you try to save a city or load a city. Makes the game useless.

Could deal with default save folders.
If there's a way to edit an INI file (I haven't screwed around with sim city for a while now) to save elsewhere by default, I'd try pointing it to your My Documents folder.

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode?
Am I right that you are trying to get a game written 11 years ago to run on Win7? :D

Try 18 years ago. 1993. The special edition I have came out in 1995.
It still worked on my last laptop, with windows XP.
Now, no dice. Windows 7 64 bit.
Also, I'd have to give Microsoft $200 to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro and be able to virtualize XP.
F*** ME.
Compatability mode doesn't help BTW. Guess my next pc purchase will have to have XP again.

You do realize that there are newer, better versions of Sim City, right?

LIES
3000 and 4000 cannot compare to the superior graphics and sound effects of sim city 2000.
I'm set in my ways and like this version.
***UPDATE***
Virtualbox + Old Windows XP Disk that came with a Dell Laptop = Sim City 2000 on my Windows 7 PC.
Thanks for the help Gents, just wanted to let you know I succeeded in my endeavor.
