In another thread he says that he doesn't come here as much because threads get politicized and because of that VBOT just isn't as much fun as it used to be.

Is he right? Personally I don't mind if a thread turns political, but then again I have a strong "Ignore" button. Let us know what your thoughts are.

BTW, Whitepower, I'm not criticizing or picking on you. My question is an honest one.

Yes, he is 100% right. About both the political aspect, and I have been guilty of participating in those threads, and the fact it isn't much fun any more.

Many people find political discourse entertaining. Many more do not. I believe that we are not-so-subtly running people off by not at least trying to leave the political stuff in PR&C. I'm guilty of this myself, as are others here. And for that, I blame.....Will, because somebody needs to be the scapegoat, and it sure as Hell isn't going to be me.

I personally vow to try and do better, or at least to try and steer PR&C mired threads back onto the OT road. So there, that's my new year's resolution....that, and to try and write "2014" on checks I write for the next few months.

And the posting fees for starting a thread are too onerous.

Seems certain folks have decided that the moderation style and level here means they can be assholes to anyone and everyone they wish. They've now all but taken over and are quickly becoming the head of The Clique.

If you go against The Clique, you're now an outsider, unwelcome, and will be driven off.

This place has changed dramatically since the big influx of people that migrated over as a result of Liz getting sacked at CFOT.

When the political threads show up and rehash the same shit over and over, I'll admit often I participate simply to hurl insults.

I really didn't think politicizing threads was having that negative of an effect, but I've of course been wrong many times before. Bill, I value your opinion, so what are your thoughts on the following?:

1. If we limit OT threads to just fun stuff, isn't that just "cotton candy" fodder? Meaning, we have no controversial nor unusual topics.

2. It seems to me that threads that either start off somewhat political or that end up in that direction have a lot more posts that "most" other threads. Is that because they're interesting or that they're just causing arguments? Or is my observation about those threads having more posts just incorrect?

3. Should the Mods take a more active approach in moving threads?

PR&C stuff should be moved there. If she's willing, put Sandy in charge of PR&C. She's the best moderator I've ever seen here or at CF. She's fair and does not over-moderate.

And just so you know I'm not kissing moderator's asses, WILL needs to be gone as a moderator. I think he ruined PR&C with that stupid Thunderdome shit.

1. If we limit OT threads to just fun stuff, isn't that just "cotton candy" fodder? Meaning, we have no controversial nor unusual topics. To my knowledge most of the users here have full control over a device that has the ability to make the "PR&C" section of the forum appear on their screens.

2. It seems to me that threads that either start off somewhat political or that end up in that direction have a lot more posts that "most" other threads. Is that because they're interesting or that they're just causing arguments? Or is my observation about those threads having more posts just incorrect? If that is so, then we're simply on a forum with a political bent, and that should have its own section. Oh wait, it does.

3. Should the Mods take a more active approach in moving threads? Fuh-kin right they should. Single posts too. If the dumbasses can't figure out where they should post their crap, the mods need to help them.

The excuse I like is...

"Buh, buh, but if we move them over to PR&C, nobody will read them."

Really. Doesn't that mean that people don't want to read them?

So you're going to flip them the bird and they'll f*ckin' read your bullshit manifesto in this thread about garden pond goldfish, gaw-dammit.

Controversy is fine. Constant "Obama sucks" and "They're taking my gun!" threads? No really. Interestingly enough, the hardware posts about guns are interesting to a degree. But without fail, someone will politicize it and the information is over.

A certain group of posters habitually turn threads political. Even the most inane topics are political chum to several people here.

Really, it would be better to hear the answers to those questions from those who have wholly or partially dropped out of OT for those answers. Liz was mentioned. I'm one of the folks in the great migration because of her ill treatment at the other place. I think we can all agree that more formal moderation isn't the answer.

In business, it's said that an angry customer is an opportunity.....an opportunity to save a customer and to discover something you might need to improve on. Most customers never give the business an opportunity to try and fix things, or make it right, they just move on. I'd guess that posters on forums like this are the same way. Some, like Liz, become disenchanted, and just leave. Whitepower, on the other hand, presented us an opportunity.....the opportunity to look at ourselves, and maybe self police to keep from hemoraging (sp?) even more members, by asking us to look inward and see if we are still a fun, welcoming group of loveable misfits., or whether we have become a bunch of bitter, joyless, grumpy old guys who turn off anyone who isn't also bitter, joyless, and grumpy.

You are 100% correct. But, I am definitely guilty of participating in some of the threads that turn political. There are many things out there, that while the origin may not be political, the subject matter has been politicized by the .gov and the media. As humans, we will automatically gravitate to one side or the other, and our opinions will reflect as such. PR&C definitely has its place, but I try to stay out of there for the most part so I don't get wound up. So, Whitepower has a valid point. Thanks for putting that into perspective. I look at it like this: If someone has such thin skin that they're going to pick up their toys and go home because of something that was said to them...well, I don't miss 'em.

I've posted some stuff that some/a lot of you found entertaining; other times, I've has my ass raked over the coals. Do the negative comments hurt my feelings? Nah. If I've been a prick I try to correct it, but I don't get defensive and adhere to an indefensible position.

I think that most if not all of us know what to expect from one another. I consider, say, DAB and Sea Six and those damned Canuckistanis to be my close internet friends. Do we abuse each other unmercifully? A resounding "Yes!". I'd have it no other way.

Is this post missing the point of this thread? Maybe...but not to me. I like you guys (except for that one guy), and I hope you don't get all contrite and mushy in the future. Do we need to be a little more considerate? It never hurts to ask ourselves that question to keep us from becoming fierce internet warriors. Are major changes needed? I don't think so.

People drift in and out as they please.

Well said. I think it's only natural for any place/relationship/friends to become somewhat less interesting with time. Do you still have hot sex with your spouse? Good for you if you do, but it's likely cooled down to a comfortable routine by now. Uninteresting? That's a bit strong, though. More like you know what to expect now.

I'm rather surprised at this thread. I've seen some insults flung in other threads that I thought were in fun. Perhaps not. Certainly a few of you have rubbed me the wrong way but I take it in stride. It's the interwebs, in person you'd probably all be polite, or at least behave.

I've teased some of you on occasion, such as talking about Spence's barbies. All meant in fun. If anyone here was butthurt by anything I said, I apologize.

As for the ladies, I think in a place that's majority male, and where we let it all hang out...it's going to be hard to hold on to the ladies. I doubt I'd stick around long in a place dominated by women. There are only so many comments about bloating and spotting before I'd be gone :leaving:

You know what?

I can sum up 100% the issue of political threads in OT.

From the perspective of one who enjoys political discussions:

If you post something in PRC, there are about 5-10% the number of folks who will actively participate in the thread, as opposed to if it were posted in OT.

For WHATEVER reason, most people only look in OT. So, if you like political discussion, and you don't want to actually get it responded to in a meaningful way, and you are looking for a place to post it, put it in PRC.

For the folks who don't like political discussions, well... there are plenty of other thread topics in OT that don't interest you. EXAMPLE) There is a thread about cake mixers. You don't happen to care anything at all about cake mixers... or perhaps, you absolutely HATE/DESPISE cake mixers because of that unfortunate accident where your father was murdered tragically by a cake-mixer serial killer, to which you were a witness.

What do you do? You either don't go in the thread (if you don't know what it is about based on the title) or, if you find yourself horrified to discover, it turns out to be a thread about cake mixers.. you f'king leave the thread, and don't come back.

Simple! Right?

Why don't you just leave or don't go in the political threads in the first place if you don't like them?

I've NEVER gotten an answer to that question.

So.

Answer it, you people who don't like political threads. Right here and now. Why do you torture yourself by going in there? And posting there? In some cases, repeatedly?

Simple.

Because as I stated earlier, even the most inane subject will turn political with some people. Take the myriad of gun threads. It's not enough to discuss the new Ruger, which is interesting even to a non gun guy like myself. Invariably some cornhole will jump in with his political bent on how fuked up the gun laws are and how its Obama's fault. Which will trigger some other cornhole to say exactly the same thing. Before you know it, what was an interesting thread has been polluted with politics.

he doesn't come here as much because threads get politicized

I'm just reading this thread for the first time. I know how some people feel; but think I can best sum it up by editing the original claim:

certain people don't come here as much because the threads political contents are not the direction of their particular persuasion.

Lets face it, if the political leanings were to ones favor... they would be:

1. still posting as often
2. not complaining about politics being mentioned

On the subject of PR&C, I started lurking on this forum because the PR&C was very active, very entertaining and it wasn't a 99% conservative circle jerk like CF PR&C. I'm primarily conservative, but I'm liberal on some topics. Over there if you make 100 conservative posts and one liberal one, you are called an Obama slurping communist. So I enjoyed the relative diversity here. There were a few liberal members here that were very entertaining and kept things lively. I both bashed them and agreed with them on various occasions. Finally enough conservatives whined about how annoying they were and they got banned. The result was crickets or the aforementioned circle jerk, with the exception of Phil's occasional posts. Hey, I rarely agree totally with Phil, but love him or hate him he's the only one who occasionally lights thing up.

I PMd mods about this situation and with a few exceptions was ignored or insulted by them in both PMs and openly in threads. Frankly, CF moderators have never done this with me.

Why do you get all bent out of shape for political threads (being bent out of shape occurs when you go back to a thread for which you KNOW you don't like)?

We have a black kitchen aide stand mixer but we rarely use it, consequently we put it away for storage in one of the cupboards. Today I ended up using a whisk to mix a cake for my wife because the person that started the project didn't want to haul that heavy mofo out.

I was bummed to say the least.

We also have the meat grinder attachment that I've used exactly once. I made meat loaf.

They are heavy.

Check out Mikes post here (post #4).. http://www.thevettebarn.com/forums/off-topic/61061-yet-another-reason-carry-all-time.html

Shit like this happens multiple times a day.. It's old. I'm not singling him out, its just a recent example i read earlier. Any opportunity to make a dig at somone that isn't like the masses here doesn't go missed.

This is post #4:

their punishment will be...

"free cell phones
increased food stamps
free section 8 housing
free healthcare
free college assistance
multiple pre-filled-out ballots for the next general election

all given, while the non-thug working men & women are forced to pay for it all."

Is that stereotyping? Of course it is. Is it that far from the truth? Regrettably, not that absurd. I see some racial overtones here, and I am insulted. You, as well as I, know that racial stereotypes persist today, but some of them are getting closer and closer to reality. Incidence of Blacks vs. Whites on food stamps? Blacks are about twice as likely as whites to have used this benefit during their lives (31% vs. 15%).

The racial breakdown of welfare benefits (not including food stamps) doled out by race is as follows: Blacks acquire 39.8% of welfare benefits. But they comprise only about 12% of the population. The government, on all levels, still ties benefits, political patronage and state contracts to skin color. Governments still organize, categorize and rank us by our race. The federal government allocates $185 billion annually for minority programs.

Do you understand why there might be frustration on this issue?

Mixed race kids (obviously)
Lived in NY up until 05
Registered Democrat
Nonbeleiver
A little Liberal but i have common sense
Hard worker
Business owner
Gay rights is a good thing.
Trying to make my own way and be successful

Because of my background, and makeup i am as close to the opposite of everyone here in terms of ideals and beleifs as one can be. There are a few guys here that share similar opinions as me on alot of issues but the VAST majority don't.

Now when you have an OT forum where everyone constantly brings politics into every thread that there is an opening to do so, when you belief system is the compete opposite of the masses, it grows old really quick.. Topics like reverse discrimination, immigration reform, Obama/Democrat/Liberal bashing, etc grow old quick to someone like me. You have your right to believe in what you want but i don't want to hear you opinions on this shit on a daily basis in an OT forum when there is a PRC forum to serve as that outlet for you.. That's why i made the comment i did in Mr Daniels thread about you being nominated for the guy that turns threads political the most.

He's not the only one that does it.

It's actually the primary reason I have been coming here less and less actually. The forum used to be good natured and fun. I just don't enjoy it as much as I used too. I don't even stay logged in any longer..

I've meet some really good people as a result of this forum and i will continue to stay in touch with them. Funny part about it is they are all the same people i am saying that are the complete opposite of me from and ideals standpoint but we seem to find some common ground..

What i'm trying to say is this.... If the forum stays on the course that it is on, i'll be here less and less due to the fact that what you guys want to talk about won't be of interest of me. Not only that but half of it will probably piss me off as its contrary to my opinions on certain topics. And if its not of interest and annoys me, why bother participate?

You want to start a political thread in OT go for it. It will probably get moved...probably.

The issue is with what Thomas or Jeff mentioned about turning a thread that many people may have been enjoying into a bash fest.
It gets old and personally I won't make the effort to get involved as I have no interest in arguing with people who have no outcome on my life.

There are definitely cliques here and they are politically based.

Either way I don't enjoy it here anymore which is why I don't spend my time here anymore. I took the advice of if you don't like it fukk off. So I fukked off.

I think you know this :)

You call it a colloquialism, I think it's an exaggeration. Fair enough.

Anyone who does what I have been doing for years and volunteers to work at their polling place is in for a real eye opener about how difficult it would be to violate voting laws without being caught. The very fact the stories you speak of are on the news is evidence of just that. People got caught.

The #1 easy opportunity for voter fraud is mail in ballots. And voter ID laws (which I don't object to) do nothing to address that.

But it's not BS.

Example:
A certain President made a clear statement right before an election. After he won, he did an abrupt 180 on that statement.

Like I said earlier; some people (who voted for the guy) will claim that mentioning this historical fact ... is "political".

A statement of fact ... does not need be forced into another section of the forum.

Look, if I didn't like someone here; I would put them on my ignore list.

But I have never done that myself. My feelings can't be hurt because they are based on what's really going on; and not some pretend world that some cults try to get people to believe in.

If I find out my view was based on faulty facts; I'd update my understanding of the specific immediately; and not call out the person who told it like it really was.

Now, is there a time & place to be uber factual?

Yep; I only was trying to drive the point home - that all this crime that's lately is due to the bad people not being effectively punished.

If that was the wrong time/place to make that point; I can tell myself to double-think before adding these items to a thread. Just let me know, in as cool-and-factual a way as the info I originally offered.

Well, this is a click forum much like my

Banned Camp Forum (http://www.bannedcampforum.org/)

except it masks itself as a vette forum (which it's not). I thought about growing camp. But all the people that bitch and whine don't want the masses. There is no win. As soon as there is too much opinion people leave. Or too much opinion they don't like they leave. VB will face much the fate of BCF. Once the core group that created jump ship it will have a slow demise.

FB filled that gap that forums can't. If you don't like someone, boot them. Forums don't work like that.

I don't see where people get offended. There are tons of threads I don't read here of political nature. I just don't open them. It's pretty simple. But having run a forum, people don't seem to get that. It's pretty sad really.

You... want to point a finger, and tell the person they aren't doing things the way you think they should be, and that they should change things to be more like you want them to be.

...

Bullshit ?

First off; I'm not "on a side".

Second, where do we go to see if Snopes has it right?

Here's the facts; there's no slanting; it's actually happening:

The Federal Communications Commission oversees the Lifeline program, created in 1984 to make sure impoverished Americans had telephone service available.

To be eligible for Lifeline, the applicant is to be receiving some significant government benefit — food stamps, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, public housing assistance, etc. But because welfare eligibility has expanded under the Obama administration, more people than ever before are qualified to receive “free” cell-phone service — part of the reason why Lifeline mobiles have become commonly known as Obamaphones.

and here's the facts to prove that specific:

In 2008, the FCC expanded the program to offer subsidized cell-phone service, and since then, the expenses of running the program have soared. In 2012, the program’s costs had risen to $2.189 billion, up from $822 million before wireless carriers were included. As of June, there were 13.8 million active Lifeline subscriptions. To participate in the program, consumers must have an income that is at or below 135% of the federal Poverty Guidelines or participate in a qualifying state, federal or Tribal assistance program.

Just a fact, not a political bias.

Who pays for universal service?
As required by the 1996 Telecom Act, telecommunications carriers providing international and interstate service and earning above certain revenue thresholds pay into the USF. Consumers may notice a universal service line item on their telephone bills. This line represents a charge by a telephone company to recover its FCC-mandated universal service contributions.

We're all paying for it; though you are correct... it's not via payroll tax.

I suppose he's talking about me, although I'm not trying to dominate anything. I'm just posting a lot more here because it's a lot more fun than CF ever was.

Kingpin's response was telling. I always enjoyed his posts, and Whitepower's, and now it seems they are all but gone, because our forum isn't the fun, lighthearted place it used to be.....because we can't seem to keep the P in PR&C. I've been guilty of this as much as anyone, and for that, I'm sorry, and vow to turn over a new leaf in '14.

Seems simple. We can choose to be a little more sensitive to others and have a more fun place, or we can stand on our right to light moderation and run people off. I'm guessing most of the folks we have run off were well liked, and they just left, they didn't bitch about it.

Let's try to keep that from happening, and (maybe, by some miracle) get some of those who have left, back.

I know I too have been guilty in the past. No more.

:iagree:

But there are some that take pride in being the "asshole" and will say very hurtful stuff.
I never understood why someone would be proud to be an asshole.
Maybe they don't realize what they look and sound like to others?

Sad... :(

Well put. If you wouldn't say it to the person's face, don't post it. One thing I have to remind myself of, is that humor often comes across differently in writing than when spoken. I am always clowning around with friends and giving them a rash of shit about some bone-headed mistake they have made when the opportunity arises, which it often does. I will also be the first to talk about a bone-headed move I make and getting a laugh at my expense. On a forum the meaning of the message is often lost. I have had it where I chided someone on a forum in jest and they take it seriously. That is the last thing I would want, so I have learned to be more careful and use a shitload of those emoticons to make it clear when I am clowning around.
