The comic actor seen in "The Hangover" and "We're the Millers" will aim to fill Leslie Nielsen's shoes in a new take on the classic detective parody movie. Ed Helms reached an agreement with Paramount Pictures to play one of the most iconic onscreen characters of the 1980s, the oblivious yet outspoken Lt. Frank Drebin.
Screenwriters Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, the duo behind "Night at the Museum," will be tasked with penning new adventures for the character introduced in the TV series "Police Squad!" in 1982. Frank Drebin went on to become the main character of three films: "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" (1988), "The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear" (1991) and "The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult" (1994).

Opinion: I think this is a dreadful idea. Besides the new writers not being in the same league as the original writers, this idea has everything going against it: The unmatchable dead-pan comedy of Leslie Neilsen and the "dumbness" of George Kennedy and O.J. Simpson.
