View Full Version : Tank, the cat: He got away with it again...

After dinner tomight, I strolled to the work shop to check on the propane heater. I keep a 16-pound bag of Meow-Mix lying on its side in front of the heater. Tank was sleeping on the bag of food; the bag is low on food, which makes Tank very protective of its remaining contents. You may remember that he was abused as a kitten, probably starved. He doesn't know that I have 2 more bags in reserve.

The past week I've had 4 visitors: Raccoons about 6-months-old that I assume are from the same litter. Tonight only one showed up for a free meal. It didn't even see me sitting on my stool and walked right past me. It began to nose around the feed bag. Tank was still alseep...or so it seemed.

In about the time it takes a snake to strike, Tank stood up and delivered about 10 swats to the raccoon's head, causing the raccoon to bark and start spinning its paws on the concrete floor to get outta there. The raccoon made a very fast exit through the cat door. Tank then...yawned....

What Tank did is not a good tactic, at least with a bigger raccoon. Raccoons are fierce fighters and can easily kill a cat or dog. My description is that they fight like they have 100 razor blades in each paw...backed up with teeth!

I don't have a pic of the fight, but here's Tank guarding the banana plant:

We have a rescue female Manx that weighs about 12 pound and has more testicular fortitude than a lot of guys. This is her house and she will defend it against all intruders. She has intimidated multiple dog visitors that weighed up to 5 times her weight. All that being said, I would not want to let her mix it up with a raccoon. They are bad news

Thanks. Tank is an enigma to me. He isn't a large cat. When he sits in my lap and looks into my eyes, I almost get the impression that he's...well..."slow". Then he does the most outrageous, bravest thing. It's like he knows he's strong enough, fast enough, and smart enough to pull it off. He certainly has all the other cats and creatures around here intimidated.

Evey time he runs across the pasture and into the work shop, I full expect to see the Loch Ness Monster, King Kong, Sasquatch, and an armed drone in hot pursuit.

The banana plant doesn't look like the only thing potted in that picture. Maybe Annie and Tank are having some late night boozing sessions you are not aware of? Maybe time to start marking the liquor bottles at the house.

Tank doesn't drink...that much. He just brings "laid back" to new heights. For instance, it takes him about 10 seconds to blink his eyes. Just soooo much effort....

Has your power bill spiked recently? Maybe you have a catnip grow operation going on in a room you don't use much.

Put a bag of Doritos next to the Meow Mix and see if he goes for it.
