Just heard from the breeder. Ranger is the last surviving puppy in the litter of six. All have succumbed to various immune system issues ranging from fungal infections to IBD to undiagnosed wasting disease. The mother (who was a beautiful, amazing dog) was put down a month ago weighing 45 lbs.

He said he has never seen such a genetic disaster. He is stopping his breeding program. :sadangel:

His big concern was that I was pissed at him. But it's not reasonable to blame the breeder. I know he did his best and was a top producer of dogs for many years. This shit happens. The female was by all accounts healthy and had no history of problems.

Ranger is stable for now. We are keeping him comfortable and his weight loss is slowing. He's still exhausted but, as always, he's happy.

He won't suffer. I don't play that game.

It just could have been as simple as an "opposite match" ( meaning it brought out the worst ) on the genes between the parents that created the problems.

Good to hear Ranger is stable

Glad to hear he is doing a bit better. Always hard when you know the end of days may be upon you. :sadangel:

I'm just spending as much time with him as I can. He slept laying with me last night, his head on my shoulder. He climbs up on the bed every night when I lay down. I pet him, he grouses and licks my chin. Usually he gets up and leaves after a few minutes. Last night he stayed until I fell asleep.

That's what makes them so great. I remember having some awful days where I'd walk in the door and just lay on the floor because I had nothing left for the day.

Crackers, our greyhound, sauntered up and laid next to me with his head so close to mine his fuzzy whiskers tickled my face and he'd let out a small sigh.

He used to come running into the living room when my 1st daughter was crying at night. He'd whine and run back and forth between her crib and me.
Miss that pup.
