i used to know how to do this.
please solve for angle "x" and length "y"
Thanks
you know the height is 2" (the rise), but you don't know the run, the horizontal distance. unless it is 24". in that case, Y= square root of (2^2+24^2)
24" = total length of the piece
you know the height is 2" (the rise), but you don't know the run, the horizontal distance. unless it is 24". in that case, Y= square root of (2^2+24^2)
and that equation yields 24, so that cant be y
and that equation yields 24, so that cant be y

yeah, that...still not "y"

Not enough info as drawn out in the OP.
how far from the right end to the bend?
now that i think about it, i do believe more info is needed. the distance from the start of the piece to the last bend. lets call it 6"

Would be easy if you had the distance horizontally of the Y-part.
how far from the right end to the bend?
not a big deal there, lets go 6" from the left end
edit - or 18" your way:lol:

y = 6.32"?
If a right triangle with sides of 2" and 6" is what you're describing, and you want the hypotenuse of that triangle, square root of (2^2 plus 6^2) is 6.32".

angle?
108 degrees? I'm still not confident I know what problem to solve.
The sharpest (most acute) angle in that triangle I described is 18 degrees. Using the alternate-interior-angles-are-congruent method, the angle is 90 degrees plus 18, or 108.

Guys, without further information it is insolvable. Hard data is required. Hell, we don't even know of the x and y axis are perpendicular.

Whenever I'm faced with a lack of information, I prefer to just make shit up to fill in whatever I need, and then solve the problem. I tend to get results I like more often this way.
I learned it by watching Democrats trying to justify their political positions with science and math (and shet).

The other blonde looked up and down the stream and yelled back, "You are on the other side!".

wait a minute guys! this is serious business.
i want this plate to be 24" in total length. it needs to be 7" top to bottom, and i have to have 5" on the left side for mounting purposes. that 5 inches is based on the fact that the 7" is critical as it is going to be sitting on something . and now that i know the y is going to be about 6.3", i just need to tell the bender what angle to bend it at.

Tell him to measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk and cut it with an axe. While wearing shorts. And a baseball cap on backwards.

Ok, if I understand this (and this is a VERY big if)...
The three linear dimensions are supposed to add up to 24"?
5" plus 6.32" (based on your constrictions in the OP) plus the length of the horizontal run... which would be 12.68".
The angle coming off the vertical piece would be 108.43 degrees.
I think this is what SYF is getting at. No guarantees though.
Is that what you're looking for?

yeah, except the length from left to right is going to be 24, but that shouldn't affect your calcs.

I calculate the angle X at 122.4 degrees.
The triangle with Y as the hypotenuse is 2" in the vertical direction and 6.3" along the hypotenuse, giving a horizontal dimension of 3.15".

If it's so freaking critical, use some light cardboard and make a template. :slap:
Is the upright at 90* to the bottom? If so, he'll bend each leg at 135* ( or 45* in )

Not sure what it's going to be, but in reality you should choose the angle you want it to be, then we can calculate the length of the piece.

Unless you mean you want the piece to be 24" and not 24" wide.
