Man arrested for dropping $1,000 on shoppers
Last updated: 02 December 2013, 11:23 GMT
A man who rained $1,000 in dollar bills on to the heads of shoppers in Minnesota has been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
Serge Vorobyov performed the festive act in a crowded shopping mall in Bloomington, hoping that his “positive” act would bring some cheer and provide him with good karma.
He dropped the cash, which he had stamped with his YouTube channel address, from the fourth floor of the mall into the rotunda, where a choir were singing the festive hit Let It Snow.
Vorobyov was arrested by Bloomington police but released at the scene. He was later ordered not to return to the mall for a year.
The stunt took place on Black Friday, traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the year in the US.
After making the local news, Vorobyov received a great deal of interest on Facebook, where he wrote: “Thanks Friends. May this end the black friday of my life.”
The 29-year-old later explained on his YouTube channel that he was having a tough year, his car haulage business was in trouble, and that he was going through a divorce.
“My story is that I just threw out my last thousand dollars. I don’t have enough money for a lot of things and I’m going through a horrible divorce. She even took the cat and won’t tell me where it is,” he said.
“I thought I’d just spread some holiday cheer, be positive, and kind of like pay it forward and make it snow money. I thought it’d be fun.”
Mall of America spokeswoman Sarah Schmidt said Vorobyov had disrupted the choir’s performance and could have caused a major disturbance, but was released when it was confirmed no injuries had been caused.
