This is how the larger farms back in the day used to plow. A steam tractor on each side and the would pull the plow back and forth :cool1:

Wow, that's pretty cool. I assume they weren't just pulling the plows due to the weight of the steam tractors?

Correct. Steam tractors weigh many, many tons and would compact the soil plus get stuck very easily.

I went up to the Amish market in the summer. They were plowing with a team of horses. Rows were arrow straight.

They guy who used to run the pistol at the gunclub was taught to "run" multi horse teams by an Amish man. He said the horses were very well trained. The one was out in the pasture grazing when the Amish guy said the horse's name and "gee a step". The horse moved exactly one width to the left and kept grazing. :cool1:

They did it in Britain too, where farmers really couldn't afford the traction engines. So there'd be crews of tractors that would go around and do nothing but plow in the spring, and then at harvest they'd go around with the tractors and use the PTO to run all kinds of harvest/baling equipment for the farmers.
Thankfully that turned out to be cheaper than the farmers of a village gathering together and buying equipment to share like friggin' commies.
