View Full Version : African American girl asked to change her "natural hair" by school...

Long story short..girl in school has really long, wirey hair, it is allowed to roam freely out from her head, and appears to be as much as 10" off her head...
Kids point out that her hair is very different than others..and ridicule her.
Faculty says that her hair is a distraction to others and asked that it conform more towards what is outlined in the handbook...parents refuse, school says she will be expelled...
My View: Its called maintenance...you brush it down some, put a scrunchy on that beast and voila..its tamed in a minute, and no one is put out by it, no more distraction...some people just got to resist.

She knew before going to that private school that she would have to abide by their rules.
Even the stupid rules.
Furthermore, the little bastards making fun of her should be severely punished.
Sounds to me like she/her parents are just looking for an excuse to sue.

Vague rule is vague. It should list what a distraction is-not leave it subject to one person's personal view.
Kind of like "No male student may wear purple shoes. " takes the guesswork out.

If your child is distracted by another student's hair, I strongly suggest ADD testing.
Now if junior is distracted by little Mary's short skirt, I get it.
I went to a private school for a while and my parents and I knew the rules going and I went knowing I would have to follow them. I never expected, or asked, to be an exception.

Maybe the kids sitting behind her can't see the chalk board?
Do they have chalk boards anymore or is everybody using iPads and telepathy now? I just don't know.

She's a minority. Of course she'll bitch and complain for special treatment.
I'm guessing ALL males students are also required to cut and groom their "natural" hair as well.
So WTF does race have to do with anything???
It's a private school. She has been going there for a number of years. Maybe she should look at alternative schools like public and she can do what she wants with her hair.

I could have gone to the same private school my senior year that my younger brothers were going to attend. ( 1977/78 )
I would have had to cut my long hair to not touching my ears and shave off my mustache.
I politely declined to my parents :yesnod:

Ditto
My parents thought about the same idea in my senior year.
For about 2 seconds

I could reach behind my back and easily touch my hair. NFW was I cutting it that short.
My Great Uncle Welly offered me $100 cash ( 1977 money ) if I would get a crew cut, I declined.

At least they aren't out ****ing lawn furniture. Now that seems to be frowned upon.

:iagree:
I don't see anything wrong with her hair. But if the rules say tie it back. Then you tie it back.
The only issue parents are raising is their level doucheness.

That's the way I look at it. Generally they have uniforms, grooming standards, etc. If you want crazy hair, do it on your own time, and yeah, they knew it going in.

Sort of. The stereotypes about them were EARNED years back, now it’s more like the stereotypes are being reinforced.
Born mid 40s and I grew up in a mixed racial neighborhood and graduated from a 75% black school and I can honestly say things have gone downhill for blacks in general since the 60s. With the election of our racist POTUS it is even getting much worse, FAST.

of course, somebody must be to blame. I wonder who...

If she wants to go to that school then she needs to abide by their rules. But I do think anyone complaining about that hair should shut up and find something more important to be upset about. Unless it's shaped like a penis and balls. :leaving:
