for some reason, I've been thinking about Stevie Ray for a few days. Man, I miss him.
I remember first seeing him at a club (i think Maggie Mays) in Austin in the early 80's. He was king of the scene and I was stunned by his ability and presence. Over the years I watched him rise from a star club attraction to major stadiums.
While I've met many of his peers doing festivals, I never met Stevie. :sadangel:
When I was touring with Hubert Sumlin, I remember getting a call from my dad at the hotel. He said to turn on PBS "right now!", Austin City Limits and asked if I had I ever heard of Stevie Ray Vaughn?
This has significance because this was the night my dad finally understood my my obsession with blues. He listened to country and classical. Otherwise, his only words to me about my playing consisted of "turn that shit down!"
But SRV was so amazing, my dad was floored and had to call me immediately to make sure I heard of this "young guy from Texas that plays stuff like you...."
He was MOVED by Stevie. Since that moment, my dad fully supported my lifestyle, even coming to shows if they were within driving distance.
Later, when I stayed closer to home, he attended many shows and I knew he was very proud of my work. I remember an incident backstage, during sound checks at Summerfest, he was talking to Buddy Guy (having no idea who Buddy was) and I overheard him bragging about me... I think he thought Buddy was a stage hand or something.
I never told him who it was.
Do you remember when you first heard SRV?

I can't remember the first time I heard him but was amazed on how "magical music" flowed from his finger tips.

In the late 70's there was club on East Lancaster street in Fort Worth that had some of the best local artists around, many before they made it big.
Saw Pantera, Johnny Winter, Bloodrock, Delbert McClinton, Bugs Henderson, and they say I saw Boz Scaggs (don't really remember :confused5:) Wish I could remember the name of the club, but I do remember seeing SRV.
The last time I saw him was in 1986 at the Will Rogers Memorial Theater. The Fabulous Thunderbird's opened, and SRV closed. Got to see SRV and Jimmie on the same stage, playing together.
Then all of a sudden, he was gone.

We moved to Dallas from Oklahoma in 1990 shortly before SRV died. It was huge news here but at that point I knew little about him and had not made the connection that much of the rock music I liked had its roots in blues. I picked up a couple SRVB CDs and 'discovered' his music after the fact. It opened my eyes to a lot of blues artists that I hand't taken the time to get to know.
Unfortunately I didn't know I missed him till he was gone. How cool it must have been to see him play.

Just one more reason to see local music while it is local. You need to support your local scene before the Miley Cyrus's of the world rot our brains.

I can't remember the first time I heard him but I do remember the last. I was at the the Clapton show the night before he died that he opened. That was Saturday night. When I heard about his death on that Monday I couldn't believe it.
I had seen him two years prior in Daytona Beach while on spring break. It was a general admission concert that we got free tickets to and watched him from the front row. Ended up sitting by all the Hawaiian Tropic girls later and partied with them all night. Needless to say that was one of the better nights of my life. :cert:

I went to see Stevie Ray Vaughn in Atlanta in 2005, and again in 2007.
:yesnod:
First heard him on David Bowie's Let's Dance album, most likely the solo on China Girl. Something about that sound caught my ear, so I went looking for information on the guitarist. About that time Texas Flood came out and this one is the song that dug the hooks in permanently...

I saw him in '82- '83...
Ya, he was just unbelievable.
I'm blessed to have seen him live, as many weren't so lucky.
He sat on a bar stool with his trademark brim on and just jammed for two hours. I do believe that it was the show right before this one in Toronto.
I have goose bumps just thinking back and watching this.

I was lucky enough to see SRV play live twice. The first was at a local Fall Fair...stage was set up on a baseball field at around second base. There may have been a couple hundred people on the field and twice that in the stands. The second was in the Bob Carr Theater here in Orlando about a year later.
SRV was scheduled to return to that same fair a couple years later as a headliner, but died shortly before. Buddy Guy filled in, and played to about 50 people for two hours...all of us standing right up front carrying on a conversation with him most of the show.
Just finished listening to SRV on my Pandora stream. :seasix:

I had to miss the Alpine Valley show due to performing in Chicago the same nights. I heard the news on the radio driving back but at first they said it was Eric Clapton, then they corrected that to some of Eric Claptons crew. By the time we got back to Milwaukee they finally got the story right.
We couldn't believe it. :sadangel:

Take the first song for example.
I saw him on this tour, and at 19 yrs old I thought that I had a few licks.
He opens with this and I just stood there and said to myself wtf???
I'll never get there. Then Voodoo Chile... Wow....
This man just blew my mind for two hours with his soul...
