Back in 1983, Lucas was bringing out a new edit system to the film industry, The EditDroid. As part of the demonstration for industry purchasers, a Laserdisc was created containing 30 minutes of outtakes from the shooting of Return Of The Jedi, specifically Luke's return to Daqobah.

When the disc's usefulness was over, it disappeared, until it was recently discovered and uploaded to YouTube.

It's basically the same scene from a variety of angles. Luke has returned to complete his training and Yoda is fading fast.

The conversation turns to a certain Sith Lord, and we hear a slightly different version of events...

No sound for the first two minutes, and the important line is at 5:08

Very interesting.

If the line were canon, I think it would change my personal perception of both Yoda and Obi Wan...

Does anyone else think that Yoda sounds like Kermit?...with a cold.

So basically we discover that Obi-Wan and Yoda knew Vader was of course, Luke and Leia's Father...and kept it from him, worried that the knowledge could lead to him defecting to the dark side with Vader and Palpatine, and thus...damning the Universe.

But with the Force so strong in Luke, it's a wonder he didn't have clairvoyance enough from the get-go to know Vader was his father and Leia was his sister.

We already knew that.

The revelation is that it was Yoda that decided Luke should be kept in the dark.

The line goes a small way toward redeeming Obi Wan's part in the deception of Luke, even if Obi Wan is justifying his part moments later as a Force Ghost.

I'd like to know the reasoning behind cutting the line. It certainly doesn't change the fact that Yoda and Obi Wan are failed Masters, and even strengthens that facet of their characters, something I wish were a bit clearer.

I'm picturing a Star Wars/A Few Good Men mash up.

Obi Wan: You want answers?

Luke: I think I'm entitled to.

Obi Wan: *You want answers?*

Luke: *I want the truth!*

Obi Wan: *You can't handle the truth!*

When you don't know to be looking for something, it can be obscured from you quite easily.

Yoda and Obi Wan played a dangerous game with Luke. They tell him Vader murdered his father, something that would create resentment, hatred and a desire for vengence in Luke, all paths toward the Darkside.

But those feelings also allowed them to cloud Luke's mind, so Luke doesn't start looking for who his father actually was.

He was also the jailer in the property room of the prison in the Blues Brothers.
