View Full Version : 928: Interesting Find...
On the way home from dinner we spotted an old 928 in a local used lot. They were closed so it was safe. Looks like a late 70s car with mid 80s wheels. In acceptable shape (meaning rough, but...okay-ish) but...woo...hoo...HOO..! It's a 5 speed car...if its $5k or less, it's mine...unless I come to my senses before tomorrow.
Man...I wish Greg was still around to look this thing over...:sadangel:

He told me several yrs. ago to come by his shop and hang out. I thought I would, but never put enough effort into it....regret it now. :sadangel:
A man I worked with bought one new. I can't remember the exact year. It was brown on tan. He lived in Chatt.,TN. he would drive it occasionally. I took another job and heard that he had a major stroke and died shortly thereafter. I wondered what happened with the car. His wife had mental problems, son had drug problems, and daughter lived on the west coast.

Don't do it.
There is plenty of shit out there that is cheap and a whole lot easier and less expensive to work on.

I'd be all over a 928 at that price, if it weren't for the Porsche ownership tax, which I've always heard is worse than the Corvette tax.
I too wish I had made the effort to hang out with "blown87". I met Greg at a couple of mountain runs with his 928 guys, totally had a blast, driving in ways that would have put us in jail. We had several conversations on line. He was a good guy and I feel like I missed an opportunity when he passed way too early...just damn...
There's cheaper cars to own, but the 928 is such a timeless shape...I've wanted this car since I was fifteen.
There's room in the garage, but my trusty weekend-warrior truck would have to sit outside. I totally don't need this, home projects, MBA class started today...but...we'll see.

My dad sold em new, right off the showroom floor...got to drive all of them too..."testing"...same with 911's and all them.
His take on 928's..fun to look at, and its a Porsche....decent power for its day, the 5 speeds were great...some models handled quite well...but not a car you'd ever want to own or be in a position where you "had" to drive it, the engines were not great..and a basic rebuild is about 10K...plus, the interiors are...basic...and not very comfortable unless you are just the right size and height for them.

Dude, Greg could have fixed it no matter what it was missing. He was a mechanical genius!:seasix: I really miss his 928 rebuild threads.:sadangel:

I had some motorcycle questions, and Greg was always more than happy to talk to you. I never met him personally, but talked to him on the phone several times. He was as good as they get. I still miss being able to give him a shout to talk cars/motorcycles. He was first class.:seasix:

ahh... the 928. :)
Only Porsche I ever really liked.
After a 10 year absence from Corvettes; I only got back in - due to a deal-gone-bad on a one owner, 1987(?) 928 S4, with 36k miles... back in 2001. The car was as perfect as an original (non restored) car could be. I had a cashiers check in hand for $19.5k... and still couldn't get the guy to agree to the deal. I wanted that 928 badly; but wasn't going to pay any more that what I thought it was worth.
So, a week later I ordered a new 2002 Corvette... and was back in the saddle again.

That's the famously ugly stock interior.

Probably, but not that low mileage, and not a five speed. That's a pretty rare car.
Wife just emailed that she's on board...

Yes, you easily could get a later model one for the same money. But with 928's it isn't what you can buy them for, it's what you have to put into them to get them in nice usable condition. The 1987 posted would likely need $10k+ to get it to that stage, while the 1979 the OP has his eye on would likely take much less to get it there.

That odometer looks like it's been rolled back. It has a large gap between the numbers, which is usually a dead giveaway for a rollback.

As a former owner, run away from the deal. If one was given to me I'd drive it until it would no longer run - which would be in short order - then donate it to charity and take the deduction.
What a good laugh? Go price out a radiator on one of those cars. I had to buy two when I owned mine.

in my research into the 928... I too ran into "maintenance warnings" from many a web site. There was some relief though; many relays, switches, & modules for that era of Porsche - were also used on VW's. There was a guy that maintained a website - showing the Porsche part number, then the VW part number for the same item - with a picture showing both parts as being identical. Obviously, the VW part was substancially lower in price.
I'm now glad the 928 deal fell through. Once I got back into Corvettes... I found my niche.

Buying this thing will make absolutely no sense whatsoever, I don't have time for it, I don't have the room...I may do it anyway.
I'm going to drive it after work.
Ps. I found a radiator for about $900...still way too much.

My best bud from college has one. A 1984 928-S model. Sweet ride, but the Porsche tax on them jokers ain't for the faint of heart or light of wallet. He had to replace a re-man rear diff. unit in his to the tune of more than $3,600! A new, O.E.M. unit runs close to $10k!!
http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad100/Classic-Magazine/Carros/Porsche_928_01.jpg
And this adventure comes to an end, I'm a little disappointed and...relieved as I really don't need another one. I didn't even drive it. The interior was worse than I thought, once I got in it. The paint is new-ish which is suspect. It cranked right up, and the air came on, the headlights poped up when told, and the doors and hatch closed with a solid thunk. But the rear hatch is leaking, and the interior looks like it was removed, cleaned, and then just didn't go back together all that well; it needs to be replaced.
Oh well...probably for the best. I can understand why nice ones still cost a bunch, it costs a bunch to keep them nice.
