I'm a 13 HC so believe me, I'm probably in your league. I was not hitting my driver particularly well at all yesterday, but apparently that didn't matter. What I was doing was hitting my irons and wedges well, and putting well. That's pretty much it. That and when I got to 4-over par I didn't panic because my favorite 5 holes were coming up. Number 13 is a tough hole made even more tough by the fact the wind was right in my face. Hit an "OK" drive, but was 165 out. But then I hit a nice 5-iron to the left fringe and two putts later I was in for par. With the toughest hole on the back over with and scored a par, I felt no pressure at all and made 3 birdies at the end. Pretty sweet birds on 17 and 18.
On 17 I screwed my drive up badly and was in the trees about 160 out. Hit a nice 6-iron to the front of the green and then sunk a 40-footer.
On 18 I did it the way you are supposed to do par 5's. Decent drive in the fairway, nice 3-wood just below the green, chip up and made the putt.

There were two teenage boys with a girl sitting on the basketball court next to the course yesterday yelling "fore!" every time one of us swung a club on a couple of holes. Wes, one of the guys with us, is a tough SOB and a hothead to boot. He damn near took off after them. We did have words with them. I remember Wes saying "If you pussies weren't lazy and got a job, maybe you could play someday." Something like that, but more laced with expletives.
The only thing I said, after sinking a putt with them yelling "Fore! Fore!" as I was doing so, was "Hey, pussies, I make everything with your ***** voices floating in the air." Wes offered some really choice words and they looked worried and left.
Was that on a mini-golf course? Because that would be impressive.

How does the handicap effect your score? I've never understood how it works or why it's there?

The way that the handicap works is that if you have to ride a golf cart around the course, you have a handicap. If you walk the course, you don't have a handicap.

What a handicap does is nothing most of the time. It only comes into play when you are playing against other golfers in a handicap-using game. What the handicap is, without getting into a lot of detail, the number of strokes on average above (or in theory below) the course par you play at. For instance I am a 13 HC. Now I can probably shoot better than 13 over par at an easy course (like the one I played yesterday) and I will probably shoot worse than that on a harder course. The handicap is figured on what they say is an average course, and courses have slope ratings that make them harder or easier than the average course. That all figures into the overall official handicap.
Also, depending on your handicap level (0-10, or 10-20, or 20 and up) you can only take a maximum score on any hole for purposes of calculating the handicap. For instance, I can only take an 8 max when I submit my score for a handicap. If I shoot a 10 on that hole, I score a 10 in the game but when I submit that score for handicap purposes later, it will become an 8. That's called your ECS score.
Handicaps are designed to favor better golfers. The worse you are, the less your shitty handicap helps you when you go up against a lower handicap golfer. Here is how it works in a stroke play tournament:
John is a 15 handicap. Bill is a 3 handicap.
On a par 72 course, John shoots a 90. Bill shoots a 78. These are what are known as the gross scores, before any adjustments are made. This is their "real" scores.
John gets 15 strokes taken off and has a net score of 75. Bill gets 3 take off for a net score of 75. They tied!
Handicap can also affect other games other than stroke play. Skins, for instance, are often handicapped. A 15 handicap player will have the 15 hardest holes adjusted down 1 stroke, a 3 handicap player will only get 3 holes adjust down a stroke. Skins are won when a player wins a hole outright. It pisses off lower handicap players when a high handicap player birdies a hole and gets a stroke on it, giving them a net eagle and probably a skin.

Heh, won 2 trophies, a 5-function bathroom scale, and a cool ice cream making machine (that will make a nice Christmas present) today in a 4-person scramble. Won 1st place plus I won half the hole prizes. :D
But check out the two briskets I have on the smoker and almost done. They are money.

Had another first over the last week. Played back to back rounds at the same course and shot below 80 on both. That's definitely a first. When I shot below 80 before, it was always a one-off and I'd be right back up in the low 80's the next round (or even worse...) Both days were not good conditions, windy and muddy as hell.

Had a first the other day. Teed off on a par 4 (sixth hole on a course I've only played a few times) and my drive went into a right-side fairway bunker. Hit my second shot into the left green-side bunker, a big deep bastard. Hit a 58 degree wedge on the green and then sunk a 10-footer for par. Sort of a double-sandy.
